⏰ Don’t forget to ‘spring forward ’ this weekend! 🌸

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 10th at 2:00 AM.

Be sure to set your clocks forward 1 hour before bed on Saturday night!

We will be losing an hour of sleep and that time shift can affect our sleep patterns, making us feel a bit groggy. So, catch up on some extra z’s to stay alert, especially while driving. There is often an increase in accidents on the roads right after a time change.

Most of your devices like smartphones and computers will adjust automatically, but remember to manually change the time on your alarm clocks, microwaves, ovens, and car clocks.

With the time change, the sun will rise an hour later at approximately 8:00 am, but it will also set an hour later at approximately 7:30 pm.

Also, it’s a great time to check and replace the batteries in your smoke and CO alarms to keep your home safe.

Are you ready for a later sunset?

Starting September 1, when you see first responders, tow trucks or highway maintenance vehicles with flashing lights stopped on the side of the road, you must move over to the far lane to give workers extra space. If you can’t safely move over, you must slow down to at least 60 km/h, or the posted speed limit, whichever is lower.

Roadside worker safety rules now apply to all roadside workers, including first responders, tow truck operators, highway maintenance workers and snowplow operators.

Failure to comply with these rules can result in a fine and three demerit points.

Expect some delays this month during nighttime roadwork on Baseline Road between Broadmoor Boulevard and Clover Bar Road.

Eastbound and westbound lanes remain open, but flag people will be present at all major intersections between 9 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. daily to help guide traffic.

Eligible drivers aged 18 and over will now automatically exit the Graduated Drivers Licence (GDL) program.

GDL drivers who have completed their 24-month driving period and have no suspensions or demerits within their last 12 months of probation, including zero tolerance for any alcohol and/or drug consumption, will receive a letter informing them of the change in their driver’s licence status.

You don’t need a new licence card as you can have the change made when you renew it. If you prefer to change your physical card, you will have to pay registry fees.

Drivers travelling outside of Alberta will need to keep their letter with them in their vehicle or visit a registry and update their physical licence, as law enforcement agencies outside Alberta may not have access to driver records.

Starting April 1, drivers who are part of the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program won’t have to complete an advanced road test to obtain a full Class 5 or Class 6 driver’s licence.

GDL drivers must be suspension and demerit free for the last 12 months to exit the GDL program.

Starting June 25, letters will be sent to drivers who are eligible to exit the GDL program to let them know they have been automatically exited from the GDL program.

If you have an urgent need to exit the GDL program like needing a non-GDL licence for a job, and are eligible based on the GDL exit criteria, you can go to your local registry office to do so.
