Throwback Thursday

Jason and I go back to Port Stanley Minor Hockey in the late 70's and serious Jr. Band bonding in Grade 9 at Parkside, so this one was never just another delivery. In 2017 I handed him the keys to this 2015 Ram Big Horn, and it has served him well ever since.

Now it's come back to me at 285,000 kilometers, and he's driving away in another Ram. Thanks for the loyalty and the friendship, my friend.

Lease or finance? There isn't a one-size-fits-all answer.

It depends on how much you drive, how long you keep your vehicles, and how you use them.

Leasing can mean lower payments and a newer vehicle every few years, but lease approval generally requires stronger credit. Financing may make more sense if you drive a lot or plan to keep your vehicle long-term.

My feeling? If you're going to make payments on a vehicle, you should love driving it. Don't choose solely based on the lowest monthly payment.

Okay… but what does that actually mean?

When you’re shopping for a used vehicle in Ontario, you’ll hear terms like Safety Standards Certificate, Certified Pre-Owned, and As-Is.

They don't all mean the same thing.

Rotate your tires — but check for uneven wear patterns before you do.

Most people know to rotate tires every 8,000–10,000 km, but few actually look at how each tire is wearing before doing it. Uneven wear on just one tire (like feathering on the edges, or wear concentrated on the inside/outside) is often an early warning sign of alignment issues, worn suspension components, or incorrect tire pressure — long before you'd notice anything wrong while driving.

Catching that early can save you from replacing tires way ahead of schedule, and it can flag a suspension or alignment problem before it turns into a bigger, more expensive repair.

The lesser-known part: many people rotate their tires front-to-back only, but depending on whether your vehicle is front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive, the correct rotation pattern is actually a crisscross (X pattern) for most FWD/RWD vehicles — not a straight front-to-back swap. Doing it wrong barely helps even wear at all.
