As of February 13, 2025, Albertans will be charged an electric vehicle tax when they register their battery electric vehicles. This tax will ensure that all drivers contribute to the tax revenue that funds the services Albertans rely on.

Electric vehicle tax rate --
Alberta’s electric vehicle tax is $200 per year for each battery electric vehicle. The tax is collected by registry agents and online via MyAlberta eService when Albertans register their vehicles or renew their vehicle registration. The tax does not apply to electric motorcycles, electric off-highway vehicles or hybrid vehicles.

Some individuals or groups are exempt from the electric vehicle tax, including the federal government, diplomats and First Nations individuals or bands with a registered address on reserve. These exemptions will be administered through a rebate provided by Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration.

As the St. Paul Registry is still awaiting further instruction from the engineer, their office remains closed at this time.
