With the colder weather these past few days, more customers have been having problems with their vehicles battery. It is important that you use the correct battery designated by the vehicle manufacturer. Today we're going to talk about AGM batteries, what they are and the purposes for using them.
An Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery is a maintenance-free, sealed lead-acid battery where the sulfuric acid electrolyte is held in fine fiberglass mats, making them spill-proof, vibration-resistant, and capable of delivering high power for demanding applications like modern vehicles, powersports, and industrial equipment, offering faster charging and longer life than traditional flooded batteries.
How it Works:
- Electrolyte Absorption: Instead of liquid, the acid is absorbed and suspended in a sponge-like mat of very fine glass fibers between the lead plates.
- Sealed & Spill-Proof: This design means there's no free-flowing liquid, preventing leaks and allowing installation in any position.
- Recombination: Oxygen and hydrogen gases produced during charging recombine within the mat to form water, reducing water loss.
Key Advantages
- Maintenance-Free: No need to add water.
- Spill-Proof & Vibration Resistant: The sandwich construction protects against spills and impact.
- High Performance: Low internal resistance allows for faster charging and high current delivery.
- Durable: Good for deep cycling (repeated charging/discharging) and handles cold temperatures well.
- Less Sulfation: Less prone to sulfation than flooded batteries, holding a charge longer in storage.
Common Applications
- Automotive: Cars with high electrical demands, start-stop systems, luxury vehicles.
- Powersports: ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles.
- Marine & RVs: Boats, RVs for reliable power.
- Industrial: Forklifts, backup power (UPS), emergency lighting.
When to Use One
AGM batteries are ideal for vehicles with power-hungry electronics, seasonal use (less self-discharge), high vibration environments, or where spill-proof design is crucial.
The example shown in the picture, details some of the features that make up an AGM battery.
