If you like speed holes, read this.

The two photos show a CAD replica of the time attack wheel hubs machined by .

I don't know if the holes have a function. At first, it simply looks like speed holes 'to add lightweight'.

During the first semester of any good University like you will learn that drilling holes is rarely the optimal way to reduce the mass of a mechanical part.

It took me 30min to make the hub and do FEA on it. From that baseline it took me another 10min to fill the 10 speed holes and make a very small change to the back of the fl**ge itself. Back to the FEA with the same load case, the improved hub is now:
-Lighter
-Stiffer
-Stronger
-Less compliance
-Reduced stress
-Improved load path
-Improved fatigue life
-Take less time to machine
-The CNC code is shorter
-etc
