We've all been there. You're driving, minding your own business when you suddenly run over that big pothole! Some potholes are barely noticeable. Others feel like you just took the axle off your vehicle! If you hit a pothole, watch for 'Pothole Hangover'. The things to watch out for are any vibrations, pulling, steering-wheel changes, tire bulges or new noises. In our industry, the socket wrench is one of the most important tools in our toolbox. Here's a few fun things you may not know about socket wrenches!

⚙️ The ratcheting wrench is more than 150 years old. Early ratcheting wrench designs date back to the 1800s, long before anyone was using them to work on cars.

🔩 Why are there so many sockets? Because nuts and bolts come in different sizes, shapes and standards. Beyond metric and SAE sizes, there are 6-point, 12-point, deep, shallow, impact and specialty sockets.

💪 6-point vs. 12-point: A 6-point socket generally provides better contact with a hex fastener and is less likely to round it off when lots of force is required. A 12-point socket can be easier to position in tight spaces.

📏 What does 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" drive mean? It’s not the size of the nut or bolt. It refers to the size of the square drive connecting the ratchet to the socket. Bigger drive sizes are generally used when more torque is needed.

💥 Impact sockets are different for a reason. They’re designed to withstand the repeated hammering forces of an impact wrench. That’s also why you’ll usually see them with a black finish rather than shiny chrome.

🦷 More ratchet teeth = less movement needed. A fine-tooth ratchet can engage with only a few degrees of handle movement, which makes a huge difference when a technician is working in a cramped engine bay.

🏆 And the dreaded 10mm socket? It may not actually disappear more often than every other socket... but ask almost any technician which one goes missing and there’s a very good chance they’ll say 10mm. 😂

Next time you see a technician roll out a drawer containing dozens and dozens of sockets, now you know why. Having the right tool for the right fastener can make all the difference.

September is a transition month in BC. Kids are back in school, morning commutes are busier, daylight hours are getting shorter, and those crisp mornings are a reminder that winter driving season isn’t far away.

It’s also one of the best times of year to give your vehicle a quick checkup.

🚗 September Driving: Did You Know?
Tire pressure drops as temperatures fall. As a general rule, tire pressure changes by about 1 PSI for every 5–6°C change in temperature.
Winter tires aren’t just for snow. Their rubber compounds are designed to remain flexible in colder temperatures, generally becoming advantageous once temperatures are consistently around 7°C or below.
On many designated BC highways, winter tires or chains are required beginning October 1.
Short, stop-and-go trips can be surprisingly demanding on your vehicle because the engine may not fully warm up and the battery may not have enough driving time to completely recharge.
🛞 Take a Look at Your Tires

After a summer of hot pavement, highway driving and road trips, September is a good time to inspect your tires.

Check for:

Low or uneven tread
Cracks, cuts or bulges
Uneven tire wear
Incorrect tire pressure
Vibration or pulling while driving

And don’t wait for the first snowfall to start thinking about winter tires. September is a great time to check the condition of your existing winter tires or order replacements if you need them.

Getting ahead of the October rush can also make scheduling your tire changeover much easier.

🎒 Back to School Means More Stop-and-Go

School zones, buses, pedestrians and increased traffic mean September often brings more braking and stop-and-go driving.

That makes it a good time for a simple seasonal vehicle inspection.

Your September Car Care Checklist

✓ Brakes – Check pads, rotors and overall braking performance.

✓ Battery – A battery that struggled through summer heat may become more noticeable as temperatures fall.

✓ Wiper blades – Replace blades that streak, skip or chatter before BC’s wetter weather arrives.

✓ Fluids – Check engine oil, coolant and windshield washer fluid.

✓ Lights – Make sure headlights, brake lights and turn signals are working properly as daylight hours decrease.

✓ Tires – Check pressure, tread depth and condition, and start planning your winter tire changeover.

Winter may still seem a little way off, but September is the perfect month to prepare.
