Strategically located on the North Arm of the Fraser River in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, we actively tow on the southern coast of BC and the Fraser River. Hodder is a privately held general marine towing company located in Richmond, B.C. The Company is a general marine towing company primarily serving the forest industry, transporting logs, lumber, lumber residuals, pulp, and paper to and

from coastal mills and for export. Hodder also serves companies in diversified industries, which include shipping, sand and gravel aggregate, construction, and general cargo. The Company’s services extend along the British Columbia south coast and the navigable reaches of the Fraser River. Hodder has approximately 65 employees and owns and operates fourteen tugboats and four crew boats. In addition, the Company holds extensive booming ground (or waterlot) leases from the Province of B.C. along the Fraser River which is used for log storage for customers.

Job Title: Marine Dispatcher

Location: Hodder Tugboat, 16031 River Rd, Richmond, BC, Canada Employment Type: Full-time
Work Schedule: 7 days on, 7 days off after training. Monday to Sunday. 5 am to 5 pm in the office during your work week. Take calls in the evening as needed.

Job Summary:
As a Hodder Dispatcher, you will play a crucial role in coordinating and managing the efficient movement of log booms and barges to and from local lumber mills and storage grounds. You will work closely with our skilled tugboat crews, communicate with customers, and utilize industry-specific software to ensure smooth operations and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:

● Dispatch tugboats to tow log booms to local lumber mills.
● Collaborate with other log towing tugboat companies to assist with tows into the river.
● Tow customer log booms into Hodder log boom storage grounds.
● Schedule water taxi trips for customers.
● Receive email tow orders from customers and enter them into our industry-specific database software, managing log storage, orders, priorities, notes, releases, and more.
● Provide daily orders to the skippers for log towing, ensuring clear communication of priorities.
● Maintain communication with tugboat skippers throughout the day using marine VHF radio.
● Opportunities to obtain ROC-M marine radio certification, SVOP certificate to run a water taxi, and operate drones over storage grounds.

Typical Day:

● Arrive at the office by 5 am, collect log-sheets from tugboats, and update log towing orders for the day shift crew by 6 am.
● Liaise with lumber mill contacts to determine their daily needs.

● Coordinate with contracted tugboat companies to schedule assist boats for large log tows.
● Organize and schedule skippers and deckhands for the week.
● Handle customer inquiries regarding log booms in our care, including repairs, locations, releases, etc.
● Manage incoming email orders from customers for log boom movements.
● Maintain and update log boom priorities throughout the day, working closely with tugboat skippers.
● Respond to requests from other tugboat companies seeking Hodder's assistance in moving barges, organizing crew as needed, often with short notice.

Training:

● No prior industry knowledge required; comprehensive training will be provided.
● Training covers various aspects, including tug assist software, digital timesheets, log towing processes, barge towing procedures, storage ground and barge tie-up locations, and more.
● Training hours are Monday-Friday, 8 am - 5 pm, lasting approximately 3-6 months.
● Upon successful completion of training, you will transition to a 7 days on, 7 days off schedule, Monday to Sunday.

Qualifications:

● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
● Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
● Willingness to learn and adapt to new processes and software.
● Flexibility to handle evening calls and respond to urgent requests.
● Marine radio certification and related certifications are a plus.
