The City of Oshawa should be ashamed! 😡
The Canadian Automotive Museum in downtown Oshawa is calling on the city for increased support in response to growing challenges with trespassing, vandalism and other public nuisances. 🏛️
Executive director Alex Miller-Gerrard says the museum faces vandalism and other nuisances weekly, sometimes daily. Just this week, a front window was shattered, the second time it’s been broken this year. Since September, the city has issued about $2,750 in fines to the museum for public nuisance on its property.
“We have really fantastic staff and volunteers that are going out there and helping us deal with this problem, but we have a very small team,” Miller-Gerrard said. “Our challenge is the lack of a co-ordinated response. It’s a public challenge and we’re hoping for a public response.”
The museum has suggested increased security coverage of downtown, proactive bylaw enforcement, graffiti-resistant coating and help with cameras and perimeter fencing. In 2025, bylaw services issued a compliance order suggesting the museum hire private security, which Miller-Gerrard said isn’t feasible within their budget.
“We have some volunteers and members who have been coming here since the museum first opened. The feedback I’ve received from everyone is that this is the most challenging they’ve seen the situation.”
The museum is working with the city on alternative solutions but will contest the fines if unresolved. The city did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
