Could you imagine what life would be like today without defrost in vehicles? It would be extremely dangerous, frustrating and travelling would be so much slower.

In the 1930's, German engineer, Heinz Kunert, invented the defrost by blowing warm air onto the windshield using the car's heating system. Originally, defrosters were sold aftermarket which meant the owner had to purchase and install the part separately.

The 1935 Lincoln Model K was one of the first vehicles to have a factory installed windshield defroster.

By the 1940's, most vehicles included defrost as a standard feature as manufacturers realized how important it was.

Did you know that radios were not always a standard feature in vehicles?

Paul and Joseph Galvin created the Motorola company in the 1920's. The Motorola 5T71 car radio was introduce in 1929 with a price of $130 and only featured AM stations. Even at that cost there was limited range, interference from the vehicles electrical system and poor reception and sound quality.

In 1933, General Motors introduced Philco radios as standard feature in all of their vehicles. This paved the way for other manufactures to follow. The 40's and 50's experienced further advancements in not only radio technology but also broadcasting. FM radio was introduced in the 1960's.

As with everything, advancement continued over the years, including wider broadcasting areas, the introduction of 8 track tapes, cassettes, CD's, digital tuners and leading to the integration of GPS and mobile devices.

Any predictions as to what will be next?
