It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our leader, father, grandfather and brother, Spike Boston. He was the proud owner of Doyle Boston Sails in Point Edward since 1968 and a respected figure in the sailing community. He was proud of his nearly 40 year relationship with Doyle Sails, where his family loft is the oldest loft within the worldwide sailmaking group other than Robbie Doyle’s personal loft.

Spike, age 80, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospice in Sarnia.

A skilled sailmaker and lifelong sailor, Spike dedicated much of his life to the craft of sailmaking and to the water he loved so much. His hands built more than sails—they built friendships and a reputation for quality, determination, and pride in his work. Sailing was not just something he did; it was part of who he was. As Commodore of Wednesday night racing, Spike found great joy in the race shack and took pride in seeing each race through to the finish week after week. He was also a dedicated mentor to many young people—not just in sailing, but in life. The lessons he shared reached far beyond the water, helping shape individuals who have gone on to become professionals, leaders, and contributors in their own fields.

Spike was known for being stubborn at times, but also incredibly generous, always willing to lend a hand or share his knowledge with others. Above all, he loved his family deeply and was a proud grandfather who cherished time spent with his grandchildren. His favorite saying, “Keep Smiling,” reflected the attitude he carried through life and the message he leaves behind to those who loved him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sarnia Yacht Club on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Speeches will take place at 3:00 p.m. Guests are encouraged to come wearing their best Spike attire or sailing shirt—no suits necessary. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend, share memories, and honor Spike’s life.

Donations in Spike’s memory may be made at the Celebration of Life or online to St. Joseph’s Hospice or Pathways Health Centre for Children
It is what it is. Keep Smiling.

HOOLIGAN WINS | Doyle-powered Hooligan Racing were presented with the Overall Winner trophy for the 2024–2025 Islands in the Stream Series, with the award presented to John Evans and Trey Sheehan at the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race Awards Party.

During the 2024–25 season, the team campaigned their TP52. This season, Hooligan Racing are targeting the same title aboard the Hooligan Racing Melges 32, aiming to achieve back-to-back series victories across two very different platforms.

Integral to the Hooligan Racing program is Doyle Sails’ own Brad Boston, who reflected on the campaign: “This season, with two overall wins and a ninth, we’re in a great position heading into the final event. Our goal was to win with the TP52 last year and do the same with the Melges 32 this year. We have one race left to make it happen. Our sail selection across both boats has really boosted our speed — now fingers crossed.”

STAR SUCCESS | The 2026 Star Racing season is underway with standout results from Doyle-powered teams. Will Stout and Danny Cayard claimed the top step of the podium at the Levin/Schoonmaker Cup, with Augie Diaz and Ben Wilkinson close behind in second place.

Hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami, the regatta was challenged by unfavourable conditions, allowing just three races to be completed. Both Doyle-powered teams raced with the Doyle One Design M14+ standard mainsail and J6R jib combo, built by Doyle expert sailmakers in Salem, Massachusetts.
