To check your tires for bumps, cracks, and nails, park on a level, dry surface and engage the parking brake. Walk around the vehicle to inspect all four tires—including the inside tread and sidewall areas.
1. Check for Bumps (Bulges) Look for strange bubbles, blisters, sticking out from the rubber on the sidewall. Run your hands gently over the entire outside and inside sidewalls. A bump means the tire’s inner fabric broke, usually from hitting a pothole. Replace the tire immediately, as it is a major blowout risk.
2. Check for Cracks - Look for deep splits, cuts, or fine “crows-feet” lines (dry rot) in the rubber. Visually inspect both the tread grooves and the flat sidewall.
3. Check for Nails - Look closely at the main tread for shiny metal heads, screws, or sharp debris stuck in the rubber. How to test: Move your car forward a few feet to see all sides of the tread. Checking for a leak: Mix dish soap and water in a spray bottle and spray the suspicious area. If the nail punctured the tire, you will see growing foam or bubbles. Do not pull the nail out yourself if it is holding air. Drive directly to a local tire repair shop so they can patch or plug it safely.
