The old garage has officially entered the 21st century.

We now have full high-speed fibre-optic internet running into the building, along with fully monitored TELUS security, with inside and outside cameras streaming to the cloud.

Funny, really — the last bit of electronic complexity this old place probably saw was a wall-mounted crank telephone! 😂

But while we’re bringing the building forward, I’d really like to preserve where it came from.

If anyone has photographs of this garage from over the years, please get in touch. Old photos, people working here, vehicles being repaired, equipment, signs — anything.

I’d like to put together a proper memory album of the place and the people who worked here. I’m sure there were some real stand-up guys who turned wrenches within these walls over the decades, and I’d like to recognize them and make sure that part of the building’s history isn’t lost.

📸 Please send along anything you might have — and feel free to share this with anyone who may remember the old garage.

Garage update — the grey is going on and it’s already changing the whole look of the building.

Both overhead doors are taking the dark grey paint really well over the Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer. Against the white siding it gives the front a much sharper, more finished appearance and starts tying in with the darker exterior direction we’ve planned for the garage.

Still plenty to do — trim to finish, siding work continuing around the building, and the roofline/fascia still needs attention — but it’s nice to stand back and finally see the transformation taking shape.

One job at a time. 🔨🏚️➡️🏁

A bit more progress on the garage today.

The old doors are finally starting to come together. After getting them sealed and covered with Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer, the dark grey topcoat is going on really well and giving them a much cleaner, more finished look.

You can really see the difference now between the primed sections and the areas already wearing the final grey.

Still plenty to do, but every coat is making the whole front look sharper. The white siding and dark grey doors are working really well together — exactly the look I was aiming for.

Had this top cap fabricated to affix to top of the old outside signpost that has a floor plate - it’s going in the end bay to support a girder for the electric chain hoist for lifting engines or mowers with straps.

While I was at Empey Lumber in Madoc today, I picked up this hefty 6×6×10-foot cedar post for the back-left corner of the workshop.

This will become the new structural corner post, giving us a solid starting point from which to rebuild the damaged corner wall properly.

It may look like one piece of timber—but it’s a big step towards making this old workshop strong, secure and ready for its next chapter. 🔨🪵

The second garage door is now sealed and primed—and, mercifully, the last of that green has finally disappeared!

After filling the gaps with silicone, the original plan was to spray the primer. Unfortunately, the compressor gun was plugged solid with old paint, so out came the big brush instead.

It certainly isn’t the finished product, but the exposed wood is now protected and the whole front already looks considerably better. Once the primer has cured, both doors will be finished in dark grey.

A very productive afternoon on the garage!

The long wall is now completely sided and trimmed, the front is nearly finished, and we’ve started closing in the final section using the vinyl siding saved from today’s window work at the Oddfellows Hall.

It’s already looking like a completely different building—and not a scrap of usable material is going to waste! 🔧

Work has now started on the north wall of the garage.

The RONA EN Tyvek is in place, and today I installed the starter strip along the bottom together with the existing corner piece. Everything is lined up and ready for the first courses of siding (Now on and sprayed with Fantastik hence the yellow liquid but will pressure washer off).

Another section underway as I continue transforming this old heritage garage into a weather-tight, insulated and energy-efficient workspace—all completed through real, hands-on DIY.

Thanks again to RONA for supporting the project with the Tyvek and exterior finishing materials. More installation updates to follow as the north wall progresses.

Whoot whoot! A very exciting delivery arrived today for the heritage garage restoration—32 bags of Knauf insulation!

✅ 14 bags of R20
✅ 12 bags of R40
✅ 6 bags of R12

A huge thank-you to Knauf North America Insulation and Prud'homme Insulation Supply LTD. for their generous support.

Knauf previously supported and endorsed the restoration of the historic Oddfellows Hall next door, and it’s wonderful to have them involved once again. This insulation will go a long way toward transforming the heritage garage into a warm, comfortable and energy-efficient workspace all made from ♻️ recycled glass.

We will be sharing installation updates as the work progresses!
