BEWARE!! π
Selling your vehicle privately? Read this first.
A scam known as the "Dirty Oil Scam" has resurfaced in our area.
Here's how it works:
A prospective buyer arrives to inspect your vehicle. While one person keeps you distracted, another may tamper with the engine by pouring oil or other liquids onto it. During the test drive, the engine begins to smoke, and the buyers claim the vehicle has a major mechanical problem, hoping you'll accept a much lower offer.
Protect yourself when selling privately:
β
Have another person with you.
β
Don't allow buyers unrestricted access to your vehicle.
β
Be cautious if one person is distracting you while another is inspecting your vehicle.
β
If something feels off, end the interaction.
If you've experienced a similar scam or suspicious interaction while selling a vehicle, contact the West Grey Police Service.
