🚨 Safety Reminder 🚨

Our staff, equipped with required PPE, braved river currents to retrieve damaged dam safety signage from the Saugeen River at Durham Conservation Area after vandalism. Please remember that safety signage is most effective when left in its designated location.

If the signage needs cleaning, please do not attempt to wash it in the river — it’s not the recommended approach. Help us keep everyone safe by respecting and maintaining safety signs in their proper spots.

Thank you for helping us prioritize safety!

DYK? 🤔

Turtles play critical roles in aquatic ecosystems. They act as the "janitors" of wetlands by eating aquatic vegetation and dead fish, which helps keep the water clean and supports a balanced ecosystem. However, their populations are highly vulnerable: turtles take a long time to reach reproductive maturity (15 to 20 years in some regions), and fewer than 1% of hatchlings survive to adulthood in the wild.

🐢 Major Threats Include:
▫️Habitat Loss
▫️Road Mortality
▫️Climate Change
▫️Human Interference

🐢 How You Can Help
▫️Lend a Helping Hand on the Road: If safe to do so, help turtles cross roads in the direction they were heading.
▫️Protect Nest Sites
▫️Keep shorelines natural
▫️Support Wildlife Rehabilitation

If you find an injured turtle, contact local wildlife rescue organizations, such as the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre - www.ontarioturtle.ca

🌳 While we love our local wildlife and work hard to protect their habitats, it's important to remember that Saugeen Conservation is not a wildlife rescue or rehabilitation agency.

If you come across wildlife that seems injured or abandoned, please contact the experts who can help. For guidance, use this provincial resource (that includes links to authorized wildlife rehabilitators) : https://www.ontario.ca/page/how-help-sick-injured-or-orphaned-wild-animal

Most often, the best way to help is by leaving wild animals alone. For example, finding a baby fox (kit) alone is incredibly common, and the mother is almost certainly nearby. Mother foxes frequently leave their cubs unattended for long periods while hunting or gathering food.

Thank you for caring about our shared natural world!
