7 Tips to help keep your vehicle in tip-top shape
Whether you’re driving a sleek new sports car, or a four-door that’s been in the family for years preventative care and mindful driving can keep your car on the road rather than in the shop.
* Stick to the Routine Maintenance Schedule
Manufacturers often recommend repairs, checkups, and fluid changes or top offs at regular intervals, such as every 15,000 miles.
In some cases, your warranty may depend on you following the routine maintenance guidelines.
* Regularly Change Your Oil
Oil cools, cleans, and lubricates the engine, helping prevent potentially damaging metal-to-metal contact. An oil and filter change is relatively cheap, but if you put it off for too long and you’ll need to replace the entire engine.
* Let the Car Warm Up
Go easy on the car when you first start driving. When it’s cold outside, it can take a few minutes for the oil to warm up and properly keep all the parts lubricated. Use the temperature gauge as a measure, when it reaches the mid-point you should be good to go.
* Go Easy on the Brakes
Making small changes to your driving habits and car maintenance regime are just as important when it comes to taking good care of your brakes. Going easy on the gas and breaks is generally a good practice, and slamming on the breaks can wear out the pads quicker than easing to a stop.
* Stop Resting your Hand on the Shifter
Unless you’re changing gears, there’s no reason to touch the shifter. By resting your hand on the shifter, you are placing an unnecessary weight on the transmission. This causes internal wear and tear.
* Park With the Parking Brake
A better procedure for your transmission is to come to a stop, push on the brake pedal, engage your parking brake, put the car into park, and then release the brake pedal. This can be especially important when parking on steep hills as there’s added pressure.
* Never Drive on an Empty Tank
Most modern fuel pumps in a car are cooled by submersion in fuel. When the pump system is not cooled, it overheats and causes wear and tear more quickly.
