Our first CanSail 1 & 2 course of the summer kicked off bright and early at 9 AM this morning, with students heading out onto the water shortly after to begin building hands-on sailing skills under blue skies. ⛵️☀️

With a completely full class, it’s amazing to see so many new sailors beginning their CanSail certification journey and gaining confidence at the helm from day one. 🌟👏

Last summer, we introduced you to John Lowery. This summer, we're proud to have him back on the water doing what he loves most—sharing the joy of sailing. ☀️⛵️

Whether he's teaching Basic Cruising, helping sailors sharpen their skills through private instruction, or guiding students through theory courses in the off-season, John's calm teaching style, attention to detail, and genuine passion make him a favourite among students. 🧠

Ask John why he loves sailing, and his answer says it all: it's the thrill. The moment the boat heels, the wind fills the sails, and students experience that first burst of "free speed"—the same feeling that hooked him for life as a young sailor. 🌊 Today, his greatest reward is watching that spark ignite in others and seeing students confidently take the helm by the end of a course. ✨

When he's not teaching in Ottawa, you'll find John cruising aboard his Catalina 315, still chasing the same excitement that first captured him decades ago. 🌅

We're excited to be part of the Nepean Sailing Club FLEET OPEN HOUSE happening this Sunday, June 7! ⛵️🗓️

The FLEET OPEN HOUSE is a social occasion and a chance to meet other sailors, connect with members of the NSC sailing community, and explore opportunities for sailing, training, racing, and travel. The OPEN HOUSE will have representatives from all aspects of sailing at NSC, including:

👉 Social Day Sailing – getting people together, on the water.
👉 Advantage Boating – adult dinghy and keelboat training, sailing vacations.
👉 Dinghy Skills Program – building experience and confidence.
👉 Dinghy Coop – coming soon! getting dinghy sailors with no boat on the water.
👉 Women in Wind – bringing together women racers.
👉 Fleet Racing – become part of Canada’s largest racing program.

The bar will be open and there will be some snacks (come early)! Meet fellow sailors, explore NSC programs, and discover new opportunities on and off the water. 🌊

Today’s students kicked things off with a dockside walkthrough and safety briefing before heading out onto the Ottawa River for some hands-on experience at the helm. ⚓️

Nothing beats learning under blue skies, a gentle breeze, and real on-the-water training. 🌊 Big thanks to Ron for guiding the crew through an awesome first day of sailing! 🙌
