Defender Overlanding Essential: Grease Your U-Joints!!

On long multi-day overland trips, greasing the u-joints every 3,000–4,000 km is critical. Lifted suspensions and factory driveline angles already accelerate wear. Dust, mud, and water make it worse — leading to vibration, imbalance, or complete failure far from anywhere.

Treat u-joint greasing with the same priority as engine oil, air filters, and wheel nut torque. A quick grease gun session at camp keeps your Defender strong and reliable, mile after mile.

Pro Tip: Carry quality grease and a compact grease gun.

Simple maintenance. Unforgettable adventures.

You have probably seen a Defender driving around with a headlight out or “winking” at you as it passes.

Many early model Defenders from 2020 have suffered from an internal electrical fault which causes the lower LED ring or “smile” not to illuminate.

When the lower LED ring on our 2020 Defender failed, we were fortunate to have the headlamp assemblies replaced under warranty. However, now faced with multiple client vehicles with this issue, we have found an out-of-warranty repair option with a kit that replaces the faulty electrical component. Inside the sealed headlamp assembly, on a small circuit board, there is an area that overheats and melts causing this fault.

To access the faulty circuit board we have to carefully remove the permanent seal between the clear lens and the headlight housing. This is not a sanctioned repair and there is no guarantee that we can remove the lens without damage or that we can reseal it 100%. So you are taking on some risk while saving money on the replacement cost of a new headlamp assembly.

We have successfully completed this repair a few times now and so far no issues.

I noticed a noise upon cold starting my Land Rover Defender p400. The source of the sound turned out to be an exhaust leak caused by a warped manifold. We were able to repair this by have the manifold machined flat and avoided having to buy a whole new turbo assembly.

02/14/2026

Over the last few months I’ve been noticing a chatter type noise when cold starting my 2020 Land Rover Defender P400. When we got the car up on the hoist with all the skid plate off we confirmed the noise was actually an exhaust leak coming from the exhaust manifold and turbo area.

It turns out that some of the exhaust manifold bolts that secure it to the cylinder head had broken and fallen out. We checked the manifold with a straight edge and confirmed the manifold was warped.

We separated the turbo from the manifold and took it to the machine shop. The machine shop built us a special mounting jig to firmly mount and support the manifold in the CNC milling machine.

While there is no way to prevent this from happening, catching it early could save you from having to replace the turbo assembly. We’ve only put about 2000km on our Defender since this repair, but other than a quick check over and topping up the coolant, all is well! We will post another update after 10,000km.

How would you finish the interior of your dream truck?

The original seats in our client’s Spectre Defender have been upholstered in a custom registered family Tartan. These seats complement the Land Rover’s original paint colour: Epsom green.
