Small detail… big safety feature 👇

This vessel was equipped with a fire port leading into the engine compartment — a simple but highly effective safety system.

⚙️ What it does:
Allows you to discharge a fire extinguisher into the engine space WITHOUT opening the hatch (which would feed oxygen to the fire).

💡 Why it matters:
• Helps contain and suppress engine fires quickly
• Reduces risk of flashover
• Keeps you safer during an emergency

👉 Best setup:
• CO₂ (carbon dioxide) BC-rated extinguisher
• Smothers fire without leaving corrosive residue
• Ideal for engine compartments and electrical fires

⚠️ Important checks:
• Make sure the extinguisher nozzle fits the fire port
• Ensure the port is clearly labeled and accessible

Survey Finding – Trailer Corrosion Matters

Not all issues are on the boat… sometimes the trailer tells the story 👇

During this survey, significant corrosion was observed on the brake assembly and suspension components — a common issue when saltwater isn’t properly rinsed off after use.

🔧 What we saw:
• Heavy corrosion on brake drum and hardware
• Rusted leaf springs and mounting components
• General deterioration of undercarriage

💡 Why it happens:
Saltwater + no rinse = accelerated corrosion

👉 Simple fix, big impact:
• Rinse your trailer thoroughly after every launch

Not all rudders age the same… and this one has reached the end of its service life.

Fully delaminated.
Waterlogged core.
Structural integrity compromised.
Visible drop at the heel with clearance showing at the top bearing.

When a rudder absorbs water over time, the internal structure begins to break down. The laminate separates, the core deteriorates, weight increases, and balance changes. That extra weight combined with hydrodynamic loads can accelerate wear on bearings, stock, and steering components.

The rudder is constantly under load — especially on displacement and trawler-style vessels. It takes a beating in following seas, tight maneuvering, and docking situations. Once delamination begins, it does not repair itself.

This is not a cosmetic issue. This is structural.

In this case, the proper corrective action is removal and full rebuild or replacement — not patchwork repairs.

Rudders are often overlooked during ownership, but they are critical to vessel control and safety. Inspect for:

• Vertical play
• Bearing wear
• Moisture intrusion
• Cracking along laminate seams
• Signs of swelling or distortion

If you are unsure about the condition of your rudder, it’s worth having it inspected during haul-out.

Now this 👌 … this is how a wheelhouse and electrical installation should look.

Clean layout.
Properly supported wiring.
Terminal blocks neatly organized.
Color-coded conductors routed logically.
Bundles secured and separated.
Labels in place.
And most importantly — an electrical plan provided.

When you open a panel and see this kind of workmanship, you immediately know the vessel has been cared for by someone who understands marine systems.

The helm layout is equally well thought out — electronics positioned for visibility, clear sight lines forward, organized switching, proper breaker panels, and no spaghetti behind the scenes. Everything accessible. Everything intentional.

On a vessel like this, troubleshooting becomes easier, upgrades are simpler, and long-term reliability increases dramatically. This is the difference between “it works” and “it’s professionally installed.”

Electrical systems are one of the leading causes of onboard fires. Organization, labeling, proper terminations, and secure routing are not cosmetic — they are safety critical.

If your wiring doesn’t look like this, it might be time for an inspection.

🔋 Lead-acid battery bank – why regular inspection matters

This lead-acid battery bank was found installed beneath the port quarter berth on a sailboat. During inspection, both batteries were discovered with dry cells, meaning the electrolyte level had dropped low enough to expose the internal plates to air. Once plates are exposed, they begin to overheat, warp, and permanently lose capacity, often leading to premature battery failure.

Lead-acid batteries must be inspected monthly and topped up with distilled water only to maintain proper electrolyte levels. This is basic maintenance, but it’s one that is frequently overlooked.

In this case, the batteries were installed in a plywood containment box, which is only acceptable if it is acid-proof and liquid-tight. Here, a significant crack was observed at the bottom of the box, creating a real risk of acid leakage into the vessel structure, which can damage wood, wiring, fasteners, and surrounding systems.

Additional deficiencies noted:

❌ No protective boots installed on battery terminals

❌ Batteries not properly secured in the vertical position

❌ Inadequate containment for corrosive electrolyte

Lead-acid batteries require ongoing owner involvement. If they are not serviced and installed correctly, they become a safety hazard, not just a reliability issue.

If your boat still runs flooded lead-acid batteries, make sure you stay on top of maintenance—or consider upgrading to a lower-maintenance battery type where appropriate.
