This Vancouver 27 full-keel fiberglass sailboat is a great example of why these boats have such a loyal following. Known for their heavy displacement, deep full keel, and strong fiberglass construction, Vancouver 27s are designed for offshore capability, directional stability, and confidence in rough conditionsโ€”not just fair-weather cruising.

During inspection, special attention is always given to hull condition, keel integrity, rudder and skeg areas, through-hulls, deck hardware, rigging, and overall structural layout. Full-keel vessels like this reward careful inspection, especially around keel-to-hull joints, grounding history, and underwater appendages.

Whether youโ€™re buying a classic cruiser, insuring a proven passagemaker, or establishing fair market value, a proper marine survey mattersโ€”especially on vessels built to go the distance.

This photo shows an AC shore power connection and breaker panel, and there are a few important issues worth talking about.

First big red flag ๐Ÿšฉ: the shore power cable is permanently wired directly into the breaker box. Thatโ€™s not allowed. Shore power must be disconnectable, typically via a proper shore power inlet (plug) mounted on the hull. You should never have a permanent cable hard-wired straight into a panel like this.

Other key requirements that are missing or questionable here:

An ELCI (Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupter) should be installed to protect against electric shock and stray current faults.

The main shore power breaker should be a double-pole breaker, so both hot and neutral are disconnected simultaneously.

A reverse polarity indicator is required to warn when shore power wiring is unsafe.

AC wiring should be properly secured, protected from chafe, and enclosedโ€”the panel cover must always be installed during normal operation.

AC systems should be clearly laid out and separated so faults are easy to identify and isolate.

This setup is a good example of how AC electrical issues can quietly sneak up on a boat. It may โ€œwork,โ€ but it doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s safeโ€”and AC faults are one of the most serious fire and shock risks onboard.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Pro tip: If your boat has shore power, make sure itโ€™s plug-in, protected, labeled, and compliant. When in doubt, have it inspected.

This 1995 Carver 430 Mariner was recently hauled for a seasonal bottom cleanup and a full hull inspection as part of an insurance survey. Haul-outs like this are the perfect opportunity to really see whatโ€™s going on below the waterlineโ€”hull condition, running gear, through-hulls, and overall underwater integrity.

Carver yachts are well known for their solid construction, generous interior volume, and comfortable cruising layouts. But no matter how well a boat is built, time, use, and the marine environment always leave their mark. Thatโ€™s why periodic inspectionsโ€”especially during haul-outsโ€”are so important for safety, insurance compliance, and long-term value.

If youโ€™re planning an insurance renewal, purchase, or seasonal maintenance, a proper survey while the vessel is out of the water can save surprises later.

This was found during a survey on a Bayliner 3888 Motor Yacht. A minor saltwater leak was dripping onto the gearbox, and in a very short time it created heavy salt residue and visible corrosion on the transmission casing and nearby components.

Saltwater is unforgiving. Even a slow drip will aggressively attack castings, fasteners, seals, and paint almost immediately. Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s so important to:
โ€ข Inspect all seawater hoses, fittings, and clamps regularly
โ€ข Replace gaskets and seals before they fail, not after
โ€ข Keep engine spaces clean and dry so leaks are spotted early
โ€ข Never ignore โ€œminorโ€ dripsโ€”salt doesnโ€™t wait

The good news? This one is very manageable. Remove the hose, clean the area thoroughly, replace the gasket or fitting, stop the leak, and address the surface corrosion before it progresses.

And thatโ€™s the key takeaway: the rest of this boat was in great shapeโ€”this was the only recommendation. Finding small issues early is exactly what a survey is meant to do.

This beauty is a 2005 Grady-White Gulfstream 232, powered by twin Yamaha 150 HP outboards, plus a 9.9 HP kicker โ€” all sitting on a trailer and inspected as part of a pre-purchase survey. A solid, capable offshore package thatโ€™s earned its reputation over time.

A quick nod to the brand ๐Ÿ‘‡
Grady-White is known for building boats that can take real water. Strong hulls, smart layouts, and a focus on safety and fishability have made them a favorite for coastal cruising and offshore runs. Boats like this are often well built โ€” but that doesnโ€™t mean theyโ€™re immune to age, wear, or hidden issues.

Thatโ€™s where a pre-purchase survey comes in. Even quality boats can hide surprises in fuel systems, electrical installations, structure, steering, or engines. A proper survey gives buyers clarity, leverage, and peace of mind before money changes hands.

Whether itโ€™s a top-tier brand or a smaller runabout, every boat deserves a thorough look.

This is a through-hull fitting thatโ€™s severely corroded and seized in the open position โ€” and thatโ€™s a serious problem. When a valve wonโ€™t move, youโ€™ve lost your last line of defense against water entering the boat.

A few key reminders for boat owners ๐Ÿ‘‡
โœ” Through-hull valves should be operated regularly to confirm they actually open and close
โœ” Seized = failed โ€” if it wonโ€™t move, itโ€™s time for replacement
โœ” Hose clamps must be replaced at the first signs of corrosion
โœ” Below the waterline, having two stainless steel hose clamps is strongly recommended
โœ” Hoses, clamps, and fittings should all be compatible and in good condition

This setup is a perfect example of how maintenance can quietly sneak up on us. Corrosion doesnโ€™t happen overnight โ€” but when itโ€™s ignored, it can turn into a real risk fast. In this case, the fitting requires replacement, not just adjustment.

Itโ€™s not about blame โ€” itโ€™s about catching these issues before they become emergencies. And thatโ€™s exactly why surveys matter.

This is a 1959 Glasspar fiberglass boat, paired with a classic Johnson outboard, and itโ€™s the kind of setup that stops people in their tracks. Pure mid-century boating vibes.

A little history for the classics fans ๐Ÿ‘‡
Glasspar was one of the true pioneers of fiberglass boatbuilding in the 1950s. At a time when most boats were still wood or aluminum, Glasspar helped prove that fiberglass could be strong, lightweight, and beautifully shaped. Their designs influenced an entire generation of runabouts and cruisers โ€” and today, theyโ€™re highly sought after by collectors and vintage boat enthusiasts.

Matched with an old-school Johnson outboard, this is basically a floating showroom piece. These motors arenโ€™t just engines โ€” theyโ€™re mechanical art. Clean lines, bold colors, and a sound that instantly takes you back a few decades.

Vintage boats like this arenโ€™t just about nostalgia โ€” theyโ€™re about condition, originality, and proper care. Whether itโ€™s for insurance, valuation, or peace of mind, classics deserve professional attention just as much as modern boats.
