At CrackMasters, we believe in being transparent — not just about our work, but about the challenges of running a local business.

Recently, I sat down with SAMA to discuss the property tax assessment on our shop at Crackmasters.

My goal was simple: revisit the category we’ve been placed in. As a Quonset building, I felt we had a fair case to be considered a Level 2 property.

The response? Because we have a concrete floor, we don’t qualify — as many Level 2 Quonsets are gravel or dirt.

We also talked about the front of our building. Yes, it’s a “false front” — but it’s there for a reason. We want our customers to feel comfortable walking through our doors. We take pride in our space, even if the structure behind it is still, at its core, a Quonset — with insulation that isn’t perfect and roof leaks that aren’t always easy to fix.

To their credit, SAMA did provide comparable properties and explained how values are determined.

But here’s where we’d love your thoughts 👇
Are these comparisons fair? Are we really looking at similar properties?

A representative from the City of Moose Jaw was also present to explain the mill rate, but the bigger issue is the assessed value — over $700,000 — resulting in more than $16,000 in property taxes.

That’s a heavy load for a local business.
