Follow a HarbourFront Marine technician through a complete morning service call, from leaving the Mississauga shop to completing the work dockside at Harbour West Marina in Hamilton, Ontario.

After checking in at the marina office and carrying the tools down the dock, the technician gets to work on a sailboat requiring several maintenance and repair items.

The service includes an engine oil and filter change, replacement of the raw-water pump impeller, installation and adjustment of a new engine belt, and tightening the shaft seals to correct a water leak.

Once the work is complete, the engine is started and tested, the work area is cleaned up, and the technician packs up for the next call.

It’s a look at the work that happens behind the scenes to keep boats maintained, reliable and ready for the water.

Troubleshooting a shore power issue is stressful enough, but it gets much worse if your marina uses a shared dock GFI system. On a shared line, a single electrical fault on your boat will instantly plunge you and all your dock neighbors into darkness. Trying to find the problem by flipping live breakers is a guaranteed way to frustrate everyone on your pier.

Fortunately, there is a way to find the fault safely without causing a total dock blackout. You just need to change your approach and troubleshoot your boat while it is completely disconnected from dock power, using a digital multimeter.

To do this, turn off the pedestal breaker and completely unplug your shore power cord from the dock, but leave it plugged into your boat. Turn on your boat's main AC breaker and all individual branch switches. Set your multimeter to the Ohms or continuity setting, and touch the probes to the Neutral and Ground pins on the loose end of your shore power cord.

If the meter shows continuity or beeps, your boat has an illegal neutral-to-ground bond or a short circuit. You can then have a helper turn off your boat's branch breakers one by one while you watch the meter. The exact moment the meter jumps to an Open Loop reading, you have isolated the faulty circuit without ever drawing a single watt of dock power.

Remember, AC electricity on a boat can be lethal. This test is done on a completely dead system for your safety. If the test points to complex internal wiring, or if your boat passes but still trips the dock due to cumulative leakage from other vessels, it is time to step away and call a certified marine electrician.

Marine HVAC Service & Cooling System Repairs

Onboard climate control issues usually start small: reduced cooling, inconsistent operation, error codes, weak water flow, or components that no longer respond the way they should.

Left alone, those issues can quickly affect comfort and system performance.

At HarbourFront Marine, we service marine HVAC systems and the seawater cooling components that support them. From diagnostics and control panel programming to aging AC units, relays, seawater pumps, hoses, and sea strainers, our team focuses on finding the issue at the source and restoring proper operation.

What starts like a desert survival scene can quickly become something far more familiar: your boat, your cabin, and an air conditioning system that didn’t get the message that winter is over.

When onboard climate control fails, comfort disappears fast. Heat builds, systems work harder, and the day you planned to enjoy on the water starts feeling like something you want to escape.

At HarbourFront Marine, we help make sure your vessel’s climate systems are ready before the season gets underway. From diagnostics and repairs to full system upgrades, our team services marine air conditioning systems so they perform the way they were designed to.

Don’t let a failing AC turn your summer escape into a survival movie.
