Automatics are everywhere now.

And for a lot of drivers, that’s exactly what they want. But we still get people walking in and asking one very specific question:
“Got anything with an 18-speed?”

Yep.

This 2023 Kenworth T680 is one example. 500 HP Cummins X15, 18-speed, 3.73 ratio, 72-inch sleeper and 46,000 lb rears.

That’s why we like keeping a good mix of trucks on the yard. Not everyone hauls the same, drives the same, or wants the same setup.

Brand matters, but the job should decide the truck.

A few examples:

• Highway: Think Volvo VNL 760, Freightliner Cascadia 126, Kenworth T680, Peterbilt 579. Aero design, sleeper comfort, large fuel capacity, and highway-oriented gearing often in the high-2s to low-3s depending on transmission and tire setup.

• Local: Day cabs like the Volvo VNR 300 or Cascadia Day Cab make more sense when the truck is home every night. Shorter wheelbase, easier maneuvering, less weight, and gearing better suited to frequent starts and stops.

• Construction: Trucks like the Kenworth T880, Peterbilt 567, or Mack Granite are built around tougher duty cycles. You may see heavier front axles, 46K rears, more aggressive gearing, vocational suspension, and stronger frames.

• Heavy haul: This is where spec gets serious. Higher axle capacities, deeper rear-end ratios, heavy-duty cooling, reinforced frames, and transmissions built to move weight at lower speeds become much more important than fuel economy alone.

If your shortlist starts and ends with Cascadia, VNL and T680, you may be leaving good trucks out of the conversation.

This 2023 Mack Anthem 64T is a good example.

Stock #1888 has 647,214 KM, a Mack MP8 producing 445 HP, an automatic transmission, 70-inch sleeper, air-ride suspension, 13,200 lb front axle and 40,000 lb rears.

We carry different makes, models and configurations for a reason. The right truck should earn its way onto your shortlist based on the work, the spec and the condition, not just the badge on the grille.

Some operations need a sleeper. Others are better served by a day cab that comes back to the yard at the end of the run.

This 2022 Freightliner Cascadia is a strong example of the latter.

Stock #1939 has just 249,472 KM, with a DD13, 410 HP, I-Shift transmission, 2.85 ratio, air-slide fifth wheel, 13,220 lb front axle and 40,000 lb rears.

It’s one of several configurations you’ll find at Hi-Point. Day cabs, sleepers, highway tractors and heavier vocational trucks all have a place on the yard because no two operations need exactly the same thing.

The biggest truck on the lot is not automatically the best truck for your operation.

What matters is where it is going, what it is hauling, and how it spends the day.

• Local: Think Freightliner Cascadia Day Cab, Volvo VNR 300, or similar short-wheelbase setups. Easier maneuvering, less unnecessary weight, and no sleeper to carry around when the driver is home every night.

• Regional: Models like the Volvo VNR 640 or a mid-roof Cascadia can give you more range and driver comfort without going all the way to a full long-haul spec.

• Long haul: This is where trucks like the Volvo VNL 760, Freightliner Cascadia 126, Kenworth T680, and Peterbilt 579 make sense. Sleeper space, aerodynamics, fuel capacity, highway gearing, and driver comfort matter much more.

• Heavy haul: Think Kenworth T880 or W900, Peterbilt 567 or 389, and similar vocational-heavy configurations. Axle ratings, cooling, transmission choice, rear-end gearing, frame strength, and suspension become much more important than appearance alone.

Buying a tri-axle dump? The box is only part of the story.

There are a few areas worth slowing down for:

• Suspension: Check bushings, torque rods, air components, and signs of uneven loading or wear.

• Hoist system: Look for hydraulic leaks, worn pins and bushings, damaged mounts, and make sure the cylinder operates smoothly through the full lift.

• Body condition: Cracks, distorted floors, heavy patchwork, and repairs around hinge or mounting points can tell you how hard the truck has worked.

• Tires: Uneven wear across the three rear axles can point to alignment, suspension, or load-distribution issues.

A dump truck can look great with the box down and still hide expensive problems underneath it.

“Heavy-duty” tells you very little about whether a truck is actually right for the job.

For Canadian vocational work, the numbers behind the spec matter.

• Axle setup: A highway tractor might run a 12,000 lb front axle with 40,000 lb rears. Move into heavier vocational work and you can see 18,000 to 20,000 lb fronts with 46,000 lb tandems. That is a very different chassis built around a very different workload.

• Suspension: 40K, 46K, and even 52K vocational suspensions exist for a reason. Capacity, stability, articulation, and how much time the truck spends off-highway all affect the right choice.

• Powertrain: A 3.07 rear-end ratio behaves very differently from a 4.56. The 3.07 is geared toward lower engine RPM at road speed, while the 4.56 provides substantially more torque multiplication for heavier loads and lower-speed work.

The right numbers depend on payload, terrain, speed, application, and where the truck will actually operate.
