Buying a tri-axle dump? The box is only part of the story.

There are a few areas worth slowing down for:

• Suspension: Check bushings, torque rods, air components, and signs of uneven loading or wear.

• Hoist system: Look for hydraulic leaks, worn pins and bushings, damaged mounts, and make sure the cylinder operates smoothly through the full lift.

• Body condition: Cracks, distorted floors, heavy patchwork, and repairs around hinge or mounting points can tell you how hard the truck has worked.

• Tires: Uneven wear across the three rear axles can point to alignment, suspension, or load-distribution issues.

A dump truck can look great with the box down and still hide expensive problems underneath it.

At Hi-Point Truck Sales, we look at the complete working system before putting vocational equipment in front of a buyer.

“Heavy-duty” tells you very little about whether a truck is actually right for the job.

For Canadian vocational work, the numbers behind the spec matter.

• Axle setup: A highway tractor might run a 12,000 lb front axle with 40,000 lb rears. Move into heavier vocational work and you can see 18,000 to 20,000 lb fronts with 46,000 lb tandems. That is a very different chassis built around a very different workload.

• Suspension: 40K, 46K, and even 52K vocational suspensions exist for a reason. Capacity, stability, articulation, and how much time the truck spends off-highway all affect the right choice.

• Powertrain: A 3.07 rear-end ratio behaves very differently from a 4.56. The 3.07 is geared toward lower engine RPM at road speed, while the 4.56 provides substantially more torque multiplication for heavier loads and lower-speed work.

The right numbers depend on payload, terrain, speed, application, and where the truck will actually operate.

At Hi-Point Truck Sales, that is the conversation we want to have before you buy the truck, not after it is already on the job.

This one didn’t last long.

Stock #1935, a 2019 Volvo VNL740, is already spoken for, but we wanted to give it one last look before it leaves the Hi-Point yard.

Volvo D13.
425 HP.
I-Shift transmission.
687,229 KM.
Air Ride suspension.
Air-slide fifth wheel.

Riya walks through the truck and some of the specs that made it worth a closer look.

Looking for something similar? Keep an eye on the yard. Inventory moves quickly.

Two 2023 Kenworth T880s.

Similar appearance. Similar listed specs. Different kilometres.

So which one is actually the better buy?

Most buyers decide almost immediately, usually based on the odometer. But kilometres are only one part of a truck’s story.

Mehak explains why comparing used trucks takes more than choosing the lowest number.

What determines the price of a used truck?

It's more than just the year or the odometer.

Mileage, specifications, maintenance history, market demand, and even financing can all influence a truck's value. Two trucks may look similar on paper, but the right combination of features and history can make a significant difference in long-term ownership.

At Hi-Point Truck Sales, we help buyers look beyond the price tag and understand what they're actually getting, so they can make a confident, informed decision.

Day cab or sleeper? The right answer depends on how you operate.

Day cabs are a strong fit for local and regional routes where drivers return home at the end of the day.

Sleepers are built for longer trips, giving drivers the comfort and flexibility needed for extended time on the road.

At Hi-Point Truck Sales, we help buyers choose the configuration that fits their routes, freight, and business goals.
