💥 5 Core Principles of Defensive Driving (The Smith System)
🍀 Applied in Training at Drive Smart Driving School

1. Aim High in Steering
* Action: Look 15 seconds ahead (never just stare at the bumper in front of you).
* Value: Anticipate hazards early, manage speed proactively, and eliminate sudden braking.

2. Get the Big Picture
* Action: Scan a 360-degree radar around your vehicle (pedestrians, signs, and potential hazards).
* Value: Master your "safety buffer zone" and never be caught by surprise.

3. Keep Your Eyes Moving
* Action: Never stare at one point for more than 2 seconds. Continuously scan between the road and all three mirrors.
* Value: Prevent highway hypnosis and constantly update blind spots.

4. Leave Yourself an Out
* Action: Maintain a safe following distance; avoid driving parallel or getting boxed in by other vehicles.
* Value: Always have an escape route ready to steer out of danger when things go wrong.

5. Make Sure They See You
* Action: Use your horn, flash your lights, and signal early. Make eye contact at intersections.
* Value: Force other drivers to notice you, completely eliminating the element of surprise.
> 💡 The Core: See further to see more. See more to be proactive. Proactivity is safety.

> 🚗 At Drive Smart Driving School, we don't just teach you how to pass the test—we train you to master these 5 habits to become a lifetime defensive driver.

🚗 FLAT OR BLOWOUT TIRE ON THE ROAD: CAN YOU STAY CALM AND HANDLE IT?
A tire emergency is always a driver's worst nightmare on the road. To avoid being caught off guard, join Drive Smart in mastering these essential questions:
❓ 1. What is the very FIRST thing you must do immediately during a blowout?
👉 Grip the steering wheel firmly to keep the vehicle straight, and gently tap the brakes to slow down (NEVER slam on the brakes!). Then, safely pull over to the shoulder, turn on your Hazard lights, and place a warning sign 50m – 100m behind your vehicle.
❓ 2. Should you change the tire yourself or call emergency roadside assistance?
👉 DIY Tire Change: Recommended when your vehicle is equipped with a properly inflated spare tire and a full tool kit (jack + lug wrench), you are parked in a safe, flat location, and you feel confident in your technical skills.
👉 Call Roadside Assistance: Best when your vehicle lacks a spare tire/tools, or you are stranded in a hazardous location (such as a highway, in the dark, or during severe weather like heavy rain).
❓ 3. How long can you drive on a spare tire?
👉 For space-saver (donut) spare tires, the golden rule is a **maximum speed of 80 km/h and a maximum distance of 80 km. You need to drive directly to the nearest garage to have your main tire repaired or replaced.
❓ 4. What are the standard steps for changing a spare tire?
👉 It takes 6 quick steps: Loosen the lug nuts \rightarrow Position the jack and lift the car \rightarrow Remove the flat tire \rightarrow Mount the spare tire \rightarrow Lower the car & fully tighten the nuts \rightarrow Pack up your tools & do a test drive.

❇️ QUY TẮC XỬ LÝ KHI ĐÈN TÍN HIỆU GIAO LỘ BỊ HỎNG (TẠI NOVA SCOTIA)

💥 Khi đèn tắt hoàn toàn hoặc nhấp nháy lỗi, giao lộ lập tức trở thành Giao lộ dừng 4 bên (All-Way Stop).

2. Nguyên tắc nhường đường (All-Way Stop Rules):

🚗 Drive Smart chúc cả nhà lái xe an toàn 💕

❇️ HOW TO HANDLE A NON-OPERATIONAL INTERSECTION TRAFFIC LIGHT (IN NOVA SCOTIA)
💥 When traffic lights are completely dead or flashing with errors, the intersection immediately becomes an All-Way Stop (4-Way Stop).

1. Come to a Complete Stop
* Actively reduce speed from a distance to avoid sudden braking.
* Stop fully before the stop line, crosswalk, or the intersection boundary. Every vehicle must stop individually; never tail the vehicle ahead to clear the intersection.

2. Right-of-Way Rules (All-Way Stop Rules)
* First to arrive, first to go: The first vehicle to come to a complete stop at the intersection has the right-of-way.
* Arriving at the same time – Yield to the right: If vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the left must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.
*Straight-through traffic over turning traffic: If two facing vehicles arrive at the same time, the vehicle going straight or turning right goes first; the vehicle turning left must yield.

3. Pedestrian Priority & Proceed with Caution
* Pedestrians at crosswalks always have the highest priority.
* Establish eye contact with other drivers to signal intentions.
* When it is your turn, accelerate slowly through the intersection and always double-check, staying alert for drivers who may not know the rules and try to speed through.

📌 Remember: slow down a beat, observe the proper order, and ensure safety for yourself and everyone!
🚗 Drive Smart wishes everyone a safe drive!💕

💥 Quy tắc cốt lõi và quan trọng nhất ở đây là: Không chặn giao lộ (Do not block the intersection / "Don't gridlock").

✅ Luật phạt: hành vi chặn giao lộ có thể bị cảnh sát phạt lỗi "Fail to yield right of way" hoặc "Driving strictly to block traffic".

✅ Traffic Rules in Nova Scotia: Handling Gridlock at Intersections:
In Nova Scotia (and most other Canadian provinces), this situation typically occurs when the vehicle ahead of you has crossed the stop line but cannot complete its turn or proceed straight because the intersection ahead is congested.
💥 The core and most important rule here is: Do not block the intersection ("Don't gridlock").

Here is the legally correct and safest way to handle this situation according to the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook:

1. If you have NOT yet crossed the Stop Line
Even if the traffic light is green, if you see that the traffic on the other side of the intersection is already backed up and there is not enough room for your vehicle to clear the intersection completely, you must stop before the stop line**.
The Reason: If you try to follow the car ahead and the light turns yellow then red, your vehicle will be "trapped" right in the middle of the intersection. This blocks the flow of traffic from other directions when their light turns green, causing severe gridlock and creating an extremely dangerous situation.

* Penalties: blocking an intersection can result in a police ticket for *"Failure to yield right of way"* or *"Driving strictly to block traffic"*.

2. If you are waiting to turn left and have ALREADY entered the intersection
This is a very common scenario. When the light is green, you are permitted to pull forward slightly (typically keeping your wheels straight and entering the intersection) to wait for oncoming straight traffic to clear before making your turn.
If the oncoming traffic is heavy and the light turns yellow or red while you are still stuck in the middle of the intersection:

* How to handle it: Do not panic. Quickly observe to ensure that oncoming vehicles have actually come to a stop, then complete your left turn safely to clear the intersection.

* Note: Nova Scotia traffic laws allow a vehicle that is already legally within the intersection to complete its turn when the light changes. Vehicles facing the newly green light must yield to allow you to clear the intersection.

💥 The "Clear Space" Golden Rule
Always look beyond the single vehicle directly in front of you. Only hit the gas and proceed through the intersection when you are certain there is a gap wide enough to fit your entire vehicle on the other side.
