Road tip of the day

12/19/2025

We have been getting road reports this morning

"Kitscoty to Lloyd left lane is completely snow covered with drifts, right lane clear mostly, but some parts are completely snow covered. The closer you get to the city you have no clue which lane you’re in. Visibility is fine but as soon as traffic heading opposite way passes it becomes white out for a second."

We have drivers operating throughout the morning, so please exercise caution due to poor visibility and allow for additional travel time.

We are grateful to the drivers who took their time and reduced their speed when passing.

Ministry crews are working to ensure roads are safe to travel. Snowplows pull over every 10-15 km or when safe to do so to allow you to pass.

When the blue and amber lights are flashing, the plow is engaged in winter activity. This includes inspecting roads, sanding, salting, plowing, reporting conditions while pulled over or safety checks, etc. Take your time and be patient.

Stay back and give plows room to work.

15-25 cm in the forcest, Yellow Level Winter weather warning issued by Environment Canada-

Hazardous winter conditions will develop Wednesday morning.

Very poor visibility in blowing snow is likely as heavy snow, with total amounts of 15 to 25 cm, combines with strong gusty winds Wednesday morning. The heaviest snowfall is likely between Hwy 16 east of Edmonton and Hwy 12 east of Red Deer. Local amounts of 30 cm are possible.

Blizzard conditions are also likely to develop in areas nearest the Saskatchewan border, particularly between Hwy 14 and Hwy 9 from Wainwright to Oyen. Wind gusts to 90 km/h in conjunction with falling and blowing snow will reduce visibility to near zero in this area.

Further south, freezing rain is likely for several hours near Hwy 9 east of Drumheller to the Saskatchewan border. By afternoon, freezing rain will transition to snow and blowing snow in this area. A sharp drop in temperature is also likely to occur, as much as 15 degrees in three hours.

For areas between Hwy 1 and Hwy 9 any remaining slush or ponding water is likely to freeze as temperatures drop rapidly on Wednesday afternoon and evening.
