There’s something about hidden treasure that still gets us.
A clue. A map. A story about something lost somewhere out there—and suddenly we want to know if it’s true.
Alberta has its own stories like that. For more than a century, people have searched for the legendary Lost Lemon Mine, a story of gold, murder and a place that seemingly disappeared into the mountains.
Last year, I decided to create a mystery of my own.

I hid the Black Key somewhere in the Alberta backcountry and scattered the clues across this YouTube channel. If someone put them together correctly, they would eventually be led into the wilderness, where the internet could no longer help them. From there, they would actually have to search.
Nobody found it.
And with winter approaching and the landscape around it changing, it was time to go back.

This is the story of the Black Key, the Lost Lemon Mine, and why after all these years, we still can’t resist the idea that somewhere out there, something is waiting to be found.

The Red Deer River has been in our backyard our whole lives.

We’ve crossed it, camped beside it, fished it, driven the backroads around it, and probably taken for granted just how much country it connects.

From the Rockies and foothills to prairie and badlands, the Red Deer River is one of Alberta’s most varied adventure corridors — and somehow, it still seems to fly under the radar.

For this trip, we only explored one small piece of it. We caught some fish, spent some time on the water, and were reminded just how much there still is to see in a place we already thought we knew.

Because sometimes the best adventures aren’t found thousands of kilometres away.

Sometimes they’re sitting right in your backyard.
