Monday Top Tip: Keep Leather Out of Direct Sunlight.

Leather and direct sunlight are not good partners.

Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause leather to fade, dry out, become brittle, and eventually crack. The sun breaks down the natural oils and dyes within the leather, leaving it looking tired, faded, and prematurely aged.

Common signs of sun damage include:

• Colour fading and bleaching
• Dry, rough texture
• Loss of flexibility
• Surface cracking and splitting
• Uneven colour changes across the leather

To help prevent UV damage:

✔ Keep leather furniture away from windows where possible

✔ Use blinds, curtains, or UV-filtering window films during peak sunlight hours

✔ Regularly clean leather to remove dirt and contaminants

✔ Apply a quality leather protection cream to help maintain moisture and suppleness

✔ Rotate cushions where possible to ensure even wear and exposure

A little prevention today can add years to the life of your leather and help keep it looking its best for much longer.

Leather doesn't fade because it gets old. It fades because it gets neglected.

The Biggest Mistake People Make with Leather? Assuming it doesn't need looking after.

Many people believe that because modern leather has a protective clear coating applied to the surface, it can simply be left alone for years without any maintenance.

Unfortunately, that's not how leather works.

Every time you sit on a leather sofa, slide across a car seat, wear a leather jacket, or use a leather handbag, body oils, sweat, dirt, friction, UV exposure, and everyday wear are slowly affecting the surface.

The clear coating is there to protect the leather, but it is not indestructible. Over time, contamination builds up, protection wears away, and the surface becomes more vulnerable to colour loss, cracking, staining, and premature ageing.

The best time to start caring for leather isn't when it looks worn.

It's the day you buy it.

A simple programme of regular cleaning and protection helps remove harmful contamination, reduces wear, maintains appearance, and significantly extends the life of the leather.

Just as you wouldn't buy a new car and never service it, leather should never be viewed as a maintenance-free material.

The leather items that last the longest are rarely the newest.

They're the ones that have been cared for consistently from day one.

At the Leather Repair Company, we believe leather should be protected, maintained, and preserved—not replaced.

Leather vs Vinyl — Understanding the Repair Reality

Leather and vinyl may look similar at first glance, but they behave very differently when damaged. Genuine leather is a natural material with fibres and structure beneath the surface. Because of this, it can often be repaired, recoloured and restored while still maintaining flexibility and durability.

Vinyl, on the other hand, is a plastic surface coating. Once it cracks, splits or begins to degrade, repairs are far more limited and typically cosmetic rather than structural. Over time the material continues to harden and fail.

Understanding the material is critical. Proper identification ensures the correct repair approach, realistic expectations, and long-term results.

Top Tips Colour Mixing: - Why do green leather colours often contain small amounts of brown?

Many natural greens used in automotive interiors and furniture have an earthy tone. Adding a small amount of umber or red oxide helps soften the brightness of green and produces a more natural leather colour.
