🌪️ TORNADO SAFETY: What to do if you are in a vehicle 🌪️
If you are on the road when a tornado warning is issued, knowing what to do can save your life. Here is what you need to do immediately to stay safe:
🚫 Do NOT Try to Outrace It
Tornadoes move incredibly fast and can change direction in an instant with zero warning. Do not try to outrun it. Drive to the nearest solid, sturdy building and take shelter inside immediately. Assess your surroundings and make the best decision for your immediate safety.
🚗 If There Is No Solid Structure Nearby:
If you are stranded on the road with no safe building in sight, follow these critical steps:
Pull Over Safely: Pull off the road, park the vehicle, set your handbrake, and turn on your hazard lights.
Find a Low-Lying Area: If it is safe to exit your car, get away from the vehicle and seek shelter in a ditch or a low-lying area. Lay completely flat on the ground and cover your head and neck with your arms to protect yourself from flying debris.
Watch the Water: Stay alert for rising water or flash flooding in the ditch, and be prepared to move if necessary.
Stay Aware: Remember that while a ditch is safer than staying in a car, you are still exposed to severe winds.
⚠️ Critical Danger Zones to Avoid:
Never Shelter Under an Overpass: Do not park or take shelter under a highway overpass or bridge. They act like a wind tunnel, increasing wind strength and collecting deadly flying debris.
Watch for Power Lines: Avoid parking near tall objects and power lines. If downed power lines fall across your vehicle or are within 10 meters, do not attempt to get out. Stay inside and wait for a first responder to assist you.
Stay weather-aware, keep your radio tuned to local alerts, and share this to help keep your friends and family safe on the road! 👇
