As traffic police we are always looking for input from the public where to better direct our resources. Where are some traffic related areas/issues you feel could benefit from some visual and/or enforcement police presence.

Just stop a vehicle for doing 87km an hour on spring garden road at the intersection of south park st. It may not be stunting but this is still an extremely high speed for the area. Even with covid 19 there are still plenty of pedestrians and vehicles in the area.

Statement from Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer, Assistant Commissioner Lee Bergerman

Today is a devastating day for Nova Scotia and it will remain etched in the minds of many, for years to come.

What has unfolded overnight and into this morning is incomprehensible and many families are experiencing the loss of a loved one.

That includes our own RCMP family. It is with tremendous sadness that I share with you that we lost Cst. Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year veteran of the Force who was killed this morning, while responding to an active shooter incident.

Heidi answered the call of duty and lost her life while protecting those she served.

Earlier this afternoon, I met with Heidi’s family and there are no words to describe their pain. Two children have lost their mother and a husband his wife. Parents lost their daughter and countless others lost an incredible friend and colleague.

Heidi’s family is a part of our RCMP family and we will embrace and support them in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Unfortunately, I have to also share that another one of our officers was injured and is in hospital receiving treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He and his family will be supported and we will be alongside him as he begins his road to recovery.

This tragic incident has also resulted in many victims outside of the RCMP.

Countless families are in mourning today. Each person who lost their life had family and friends and they too will need support.

The impact of this incident will extend from one end of this province to the other. As Nova Scotians, we have to do what we are known for. And come together in times of need and support one another.

Traffic stop results in three summary offence tickets and seized vehicle

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on March 5, a West Division patrol officer pulled over a vehicle that was operating without the tail lights on. Upon investigation, the officer discovered that the driver was not licensed, the vehicle was not insured and did not have a valid inspection sticker. As a result, the officer issued three summary offence tickets to the driver and seized the vehicle.

When the vehicle was being placed upon the tow truck, the officer discovered that the vehicle also had faulty brakes and the rear axle was cracked and separated.

Through education and enforcement, members of the Traffic Unit and Patrol Division are working to keep our streets and roads safe for citizens. HRP would like to remind drivers to always make sure that their vehicle is roadworthy.

For those wondering how many tickets were issued last month for distracted driving.

For those wondering how many tickets were issued last month for distracted driving.

Last month’s road safety theme was Distracted Driving. During February, HRP officers issued 196 tickets to drivers who were using a cell phone while operating their vehicle. Let’s all keep our streets safer and stay focused on the road ahead. HRP Traffic Cop

March is seat belt safety month. Wearing a proper seat belt can save your life.

Ensure any young person in your vehicle is in the proper child restraint for their age/size.
Members conducted several checks today.
Glad to see vast majority had a seat belt on!

Members out on the highways today enforcing the pull over law.
Drivers must not drive in the lane closest to the emergency vehicle with emergency lights activated when the other lane is available.
If the lane is not available then you must slow to 60km when passing the emergency vehicle.
