In celebration of International Womens Day 2023, Steve and the team at Murphy’s Auto Services recognize the significant contribution to community health in Nova Scotia, of three women. Beginning with the work of Marie-Henriette LeJeune Ross, who in the early 1800s rose to the challenge of organizing a community response to a smallpox outbreak in Cape Breton. She isolated victims in a log cabin and vaccinated the healthy. While the science of disease transmission was unknown at the time, Marie-Henriette used keen observation to guide her actions. Fast forward to 1999, when Dr. Noni Macdonald moved to Halifax and joined the faculty at Dalhousie University where she became the first woman in Canada to be elected Dean of a Faculty of Medicine. Her commitment to improving child and maternal health in our country has been recognized in her investment into both the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Canada. And to many of us, the well recognized Dr. Lisa Barrett emerged during the pandemic as an essential source of reliable information about COVID-19, using her unique ability to translate scientific knowledge into easily understood explanations. Remarkable women, then and now.
