Speed River Paddling invites you to participate in the 3rd Annual - Canoe for a Cure - memorial fundraiser on Saturday August 9th. All proceeds from online donations, rentals and merchandise sales will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support esophageal cancer research.

Speed River Paddling is a family owned and operated small business. It has been a great summer job for myself, my sisters, and cousins. In March of 2023 our family lost a big part of its heart when we had to say goodbye to my uncle Larry, who lost his battle with esophageal cancer. Larry was 67 years old and the heart of our family. He was kind, generous, and very humble. Fiercely handy, he was always eager to lend his expertise on any project. He will always be remembered for his sense of humour especially his one-liners that brought laughter to all of our family occasions. It’s this kindness, generosity and ability to make us laugh that inspires us to raise funds for esophageal cancer in his memory.

The early signs of esophageal cancer are easily confused with other ailments. By the time Larry’s diagnosis was confirmed it was too late for him. He became focused on looking for ways he could help others beat this horrible disease. He wanted everyone to be more aware of the early signs of detection and to support research efforts for treatments that save lives and someday hopefully discover a cure.

If you’re able, please help our family, help Larry, with the fight against esophageal cancer. Join us on August 9th. Come down and go for a paddle, make a donation at our location, or our online fundraiser page. Every one of our actions will help continuing in supporting esophageal cancer research.

Weekly paddling clinics are back! Starting Tuesday July 15th - 6:30pm-7:30pm. We are so excited to be back partnering up with the BIPOC Outdoor Gear Library to provide weekly paddling clinics. To sign up please email [email protected] or message Speed River Paddling () via Instagram/Facebook. These are free / by donation clinics and all are welcome! Any money donated will go to supporting the amazing work being done by the BIPOC Outdoor Gear Library to reduce access barriers, create community and provide resources and education for the BIPOC community in our area.

Our aim for these weekly clinics is to provide a judgement free channel for new paddlers to safely access the equipment, space and welcoming environment to try out a new outdoor skill. These clinics are geared for first time or novice paddlers to learn both canoe safety and basic paddling strokes.

Clinic participants can expect to spend 10-15 minutes of the guided session on land learning the basics of the equipment, safety, followed by on the water lesson and practice for the remainder of the hour. Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions and hope we get to see you out on the water!

We are officially offering our SRP Paddling Pass for the remainder of the 2025 season! A modified version of our summer membership to help you get out on the water and enjoy these summer days☀️

This season you can enjoy:

🛶Monday-Thursday - 1 hour on 1 canoe or 1 kayak (or tandem kayak)
🛶 Share your paddling pass with people living in the same household
🛶 Bring non-household friends/family with you (on a canoe or tandem kayak)

We apologize for not having these ready last week. With our shortened season we didn’t expect there to be much demand for a ‘season pass’ - but upon our return we had several people asking, so we knew we had to do something. Thanks for your patience while we put something together that we hope people will enjoy. We are so grateful for all the support so far this season - let’s make the most of the summer together!

🚧CONSTRUCTION UPDATE🚧
If you’ve been by The Boathouse lately, you may have noticed a structural facelift going on, and with it a lack of boats. We are happy to report progress is being made! While we hoped to open this weekend, the water must remain low to allow this project to wrap up.
We will update on our socials/website when we have clarity on an opening day. We are so excited to be back, for nice weather, and getting active outside! Thanks for your patience, lots more sunny days ahead ☀️

Tomorrow (Tuesday August 27th) we are so excited feature a full day of pay what you can paddling with 100% of rentals going to the BIPOC Outdoor Gear Library. We have been so lucky to partner with them over the past few seasons and we hope you can make it out tomorrow to show your support for their amazing organization. If you don’t know about their initiatives, please take some time to read the next few slides and the write up below by their awesome founder (Dionne):

The BIPOC Outdoor Gear Library is a volunteer lead, community-based lending library focused on providing access to outdoor equipment for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) communities of (so-called) Guelph and the surrounding areas. Through collaboration with partners and our library community, we are working to increase the representation of racialized people engaging in outdoor recreation by reducing barriers to access, creating community, providing resources and facilitating education.

We have over 750 items in our library inventory and have completed over 800 loans since we began in 2022.

Our online engagement has also been incredible with nearly 4000 followers across social media platforms.

Our community is active and eager. We've put on numerous introductory events designed to create a safe(r) space for learning and experience. Over 450 participants have come together as community to have fun and upskill on everything from camping, to hiking, to paddling, to climbing, to skiing, to mountain biking, to archery, and so much more. And we are always open to new ideas as we receive more support and funding from the community, grants, and businesses.

This fall we hope to organize some community hikes to facilitate even more outdoor recreation and nature connection.

We'll also be creating some great new swag (shirts, hats, stickers) so that all of our followers and supporters can rep the organization when they're on the trails and waterways.

Thank you to Speed River Paddling for the consistent support throughout the years. We treasure this partnership so much!

Our family and team cannot thank you enough for all the generosity and support we received during our cancer fundraiser a couple weekends ago. The final total came in at $7,061 and with your help we surpassed last year’s total by over $1,000!

This cause is near to our hearts and it means so much to feel so much kindness in the community. A special thanks to and our team for bringing this successful fundraiser together. We hope Uncle Larry would be proud 💜
