“ Houston, We have a problem”

I’ve been holding off on driving the S2000 while developing my new baffled oil pan, but I got a little trigger happy yesterday. Took it out to test the new tires, which held insane grip in 3rd and 4th gear, but as I slowed down for a corner, I heard it. The dreaded "shaking metal in a tin can" sound.

I immediately pulled over, let it idle for a minute to confirm my fears, and shut it down. Took a nice walk home, grabbed the car hauler, and got it straight onto the hoist.

I pulled the valve cover hoping for a valvetrain issue, but no luck. Dropped the oil and the pan to find the forbidden glitter. Looks like a cylinder 4 rod bearing failure.

Since this is a mid-mileage engine (around 140,000 km) with a completely untouched bottom end, it’s hard to rule out any previous weak points. I’ll be digging into the datalogs and doing some more inspections to pinpoint the exact root cause.

The good news? I’ve got a spare block on standby. Time to get to work, swap this engine, and get back up and running for the rest of the summer!

1971 Datsun 240Z in the shop for custom fab and troubleshooting. This build is running a VQ 3.5L swap paired with a Garrett 3582 turbo, and we just finished setting it up with a custom DudeRacing merge and dual wastegates.

It originally came in with a no-start issue that was suspected to be a faulty starter. After digging into the diagnostics, we traced the root cause to a pinched injector wire hidden under the lower intake manifold. That single wire was triggering a chain of electrical issues keeping the engine from turning over. We sorted the wiring, got the VQ fired back up, and the car is officially ready for tuning.

We don't just build cars; we find solutions.
