Over May long weekend, Alberta RCMP increased patrols across the province, removing 122 impaired drivers from the road. The majority had failed roadside tests, while others were given warnings or suspended for having alcohol in their system.

Officers also issued more than 1,200 tickets, mostly for speeding, distracted driving and not wearing seatbelts.

Tragically, the weekend still saw 25 serious injury collisions and six fatalities.

“The Alberta RCMP will continue to have an enhanced presence on provincial roadways every long weekend,” says Sgt. Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “Everyone has a role to play—choices like driving sober, staying focused, and buckling up can save lives.”

New measures will protect drivers and penalize bad actors in the tow truck industry.

Changes establish an exclusion radius around a collision prohibiting tow truck drivers or anyone directing tow trucks from pitching their services. Anyone who enters the exclusion zone without being invited will face a $1,000 fine.

A small number of tow truck drivers were shown to be towing vehicles without consent, not providing necessary information to vehicle owners, and financially capitalizing on emotionally vulnerable individuals involved in a collision.

The new rules support a consistent provincial response to predatory tow truck driver behaviour and will help mitigate rising insurance premiums resulting from excessive towing fees.
