Lower battery power: Avoid short trips

Defective car batteries are at the top of the breakdown statistics every winter. We'll explain to you what you can do now for your car battery.

Cold temperature has a significant impact on the performance of the car battery - not to mention the fact that heating and lighting are particularly detrimental to their performance in winter. In order for a car battery to charge itself by driving, a distance of at least 50 kilometres must be covered.

Lead batteries and cold

In cars, so-called maintenance-free “lead batteries” are almost exclusively used as starter batteries. These batteries are characterised by high current levels that can be used at normal temperatures.
The disadvantage: When it's cold and as it gets older, the chemical processes in the battery run much slower.
The result: the current available for starting the engine decreases, while at the same time the engine requires more power due to the low temperatures.

This means your car battery lasts longer in winter

If you don't want your battery to break down, you should avoid short journeys and completely avoid large power consumers such as heated seats, radio, lights and windshield wipers that use power from the battery. Often, especially on short trips, significantly more energy is drawn than the alternator can recharge in this time. This comes at the expense of the battery capacity. A circumstance that this type of battery cannot handle without problems for a long time.
