Station Small Engine Repair We have Retired and are PERMANTLY CLOSED By Appointment Only

05/08/2023

We have thought long and hard and have decided that effective immediately we will be closing our business.

I started this business to keep myself busy in my retirement, and along the way have met some great people and have enjoyed educating them on small engine maintenance and ownership.

Unfortunately, it’s the popularity of our business that has been the factor in closing, as this is turning into a full-time business which is impacting on our retirement free time.

In closing I would like to thank all of you that had confidence in allowing us to work on your equipment and encourage you to visit one of the many small engine businesses in the Cowichan Valley for your small engine repair needs.

Thanks, Glen

Pick Up & Delivery, this is a question I get on a daily basis.

We decided starting this season that we would no longer offer this service as we were loosing money by doing so, and to charge out our hourly rate could cost a client an additional $100 on their invoice.

Will this cost us business? You bet it will but to remain viable and continue to provide a top notch service at a reasonable cost, we can no longer subsidize this aspect of our business.

Thanks for your understanding

Every season many owners of pressure washers are disappointed to find that their units have failed over the winter and pumps have cracked due to water being left in the system.

Take the time this fall to purchase winterization kit such as the “Briggs & Stratton Pump Saver Kit” at Canadian Tire. These are simple to use and the $16.95 investment far out ways the cost of a new unit next spring.

Is your Generator Prepared?

Storm Season is coming, and your generator has been sitting in the shed, garage or under a tarp all summer. Will it run when you need it?
Let’s begin with a few easy steps to ensure that you have the emergency power you need in the event of an unforeseen outage.

Engine Preparation

1. Check and top up or replace your engine oil if required.
2. Clean and charge up your battery if equipped.
3. Drain your fuel tank and replace it with the highest-octane fuel available. Many gas suppliers do not add ethanol to this fuel but ask your supplier to be sure.
4. Run it up and ensure that everything is operational.
5. If equipped, shut of your fuel valve, and run the engine until it dies so fuel doesn’t sit in the carburetor.
6. Test run your generator monthly to keep it exercised.

Fuel Supply

Fuel supplied at a service station is designed for automobiles with an expectation that what is pumped into your tank will be used in 30 days or less. This presents challenges for small engines and the storage of fuel for them over a longer period.

OK here is where the game changes. Its wintertime on the west coast and many of us have generators as a backup power source and we need to store enough fuel for them to get us through an outage of a few hours or few days.

Here is what you can do to mitigate the issue.

1. Decide how much fuel you need?
2. In the fall, fill your fuel cans with fresh high-octane fuel and ad a fuel stabilizer to them.
3. Use this new fuel to fill up your generator, and
4. Store your cans in a dry area, and keep your lids tightly closed to help slow down moisture absorption into the fuel.

High octane fuel with the correct amount of fuel stabilizer in my experience can last up to six months if stored properly. Taking the above steps should ensure that you will have a trouble free start up in the event that you need emergency power.

Ethanol Fuels and the Effects on Small Engines

Background:

Under Federal Government regulations, all lower octane gasoline in Canada must have at least 5% ethanol content.

Though this is good for the environment, it has created issues of reliability in the small engine industry. Such as incompatibility with certain rubber components, corrosion issues since ethanol attracts water or poor performance due to low octane levels.

Ethanol based fuel only has a shelf life of 30 – 60 days depending on factors such as heat and ambient moisture levels. After that time, octane levels quickly deteriorate, and water content increases.

After examining the issue, the industry has discovered that many users with reliability problems were indeed using fuel that was past the 60-day point. After this point the octane levels drop to a level where many two stroke motors will no longer start, have reduced performance, or experience premature detonation causing internal engine damage.
Recommended Solution.

- All small engine equipment should always be fuelled with fresh fuel that is not over 30 days old.

- Fuel storage should be limited to what can be reasonably used in a 30-day period.

- Use an Engineered Fuel product for equipment that is not used on a regular basis, such as chain saws, hedge trimmers etc.

- All engines should be drained, and engines run dry to remove fuel from the carburetors if the engine is not going to be used past 30 days.
