ZEPHYR -Trend-Setting Naked Model- At a time in the 1980s when fully-faired supersports were flooding the market, Kawasaki released this air-cooled four-cylinder naked model. The engine, originating from the Z400FX, was a 400cc air-cooled four-stroke capable of producing 54 PS in the 1987 GPz400F. But, Kawasaki deliberately set the output for this model at 46 PS with the goal of simple handling for everyday riding. The styling was centered around the elegance of the air-cooled engine itself, highlighting the functional beauty of a naked bike. Named after the Greek god of the west wind, the Zephyr became a huge hit. It was aided by an affordable price point, which was intended to inspire its target demographic (riders aged 20-30) to buy one. Building on the success of this 400cc model, Kawasaki took the unusual step of expanding the lineup to include larger-displacement models. The ZEPHYR series later went on to include the ZEPHYR 750 and ZEPHYR 1100, becoming a long-selling line that continued through the 2000s.
