Holiday Hours and Update

Our office will be closed for the holidays Thursday, December 24th through Monday, December 28th. Regular office and warehouse hours resume January 4, 2021.

In light of Covid restrictions we will not be having a staff Christmas party this year. We will be using those funds to make donations to some local charities including The Public Good Society of Dartmouth and Hospice Halifax. We will also be helping a local family whose daughter Tahlia (and her mother) have been in Toronto since March at SickKids hospital. Tahlia underwent a double lung transplant in late November. While they are fortunate her surgery was free there are many other expenses for the family to cover including spending a year away from home, medications, wheelchairs and other medical equipment not covered by our public healthcare system. The family's business is a limo company which has also been affected by the pandemic.

We wish all of our friends, customers, suppliers, partners, and community a happy holiday season and all of the best for 2021! Thank you!!

Most vehicles we ship are new. A few are gently used. We also ship a few classics. Then a couple of weeks ago we had our first vehicle that was in literally thousands of pieces. It is/was a 1967 Jaguar. A huge thank you to some companies we work with including Dave Horne Automotive Ltd. and Mather's Freight that helped us with the logistics on this one.

HURRICANE TEDDY — MORNING UPDATE (September 22, 2020)

Hurricane Teddy has strengthened as expected overnight and is now a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 165km/h and gusts up to 195km/h. Teddy is growing rapidly in size, with hurricane-force winds extending up to 220km from the centre and tropical storm-force winds extending up to 645km from the centre.

It is likely that Teddy will undergo a rapid extratropical transition prior to making landfall tomorrow morning somewhere between Halifax and the Strait of Canso. Teddy is already exhibiting classic traits of being extratropical, such as a comma shape and having developed a cold front that extends down towards Florida. Despite this, its core remains a warm core and the National Hurricane Center in the U.S. says that it is still a hurricane at this time.

There are currently tropical storm warnings, tropical storm watches, rainfall warnings, wind warnings and storm surge warnings in effect across Nova Scotia and PEI, and a rainfall warning has been issued for Moncton and Southeast New Brunswick.

WIND — Most regions of Nova Scotia will experience tropical storm-force sustained winds (63+ km/h), with the potential for wind gusts of 90 to 110km/h over exposed areas and along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia. There is a risk of hurricane-force wind gusts (119+ km/h) in Eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton as they will be on the eastern half of the storm. As you can see on the official track from the National Hurricane Center below, the wind field is very large and will affect the entire province.

STORM SURGE — Large waves of 7 to 10 metres (22 to 33 feet) will build along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia on Tuesday. These waves could break even higher along parts of the coast. These high waves combined with large swells and rip currents will cause storm surge potentially as high as 50cm during high tide times. Those who live on the immediate coast are advised to prepare accordingly for property damage and to exercise extreme caution.

RAINFALL — Rainfall warnings have been issued for all of Nova Scotia except Digby and Yarmouth counties. Rainfall amounts of 50 to 75mm are possible across most of the province. For Lunenburg, Halifax and Guysborough counties, there is the potential to see amounts of 50mm from Tuesday afternoon to 6am Wednesday and then an additional 50+mm possible by Wednesday evening. In PEI, it is likely rainfall amounts will be in the 50-75mm range. A rainfall warning has also been issued for Moncton and Southeast New Brunswick for amounts of up to 50mm.

TIMEFRAME — High winds and rain from Teddy will come in two rounds due to the nature of the storm’s motion and its expected transition to extratropical status. A band of high winds and heavy rain has begun to move across the province starting this morning and will intensify throughout the afternoon and evening. The wind and rain will then subside overnight Tuesday into Wednesday before re-intensifying Wednesday morning as Teddy moves to make landfall somewhere along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia. Winds and rain will then subside for the second and final time by Wednesday evening.

INTENSITY — Teddy will not be as intense as Hurricane Dorian last September, nor will it compare to Hurricane Juan from 2003. Teddy will still be a dangerous storm, especially along the coast. It is important to be prepared though because extratropical storms can still be damaging, such as Arthur in 2014 and Noel in 2007.

Make sure your emergency kit is stocked up and ready just in case you lose power. It is recommended that you be ready to be without power for up to 72 hours.

It is also important to note that Teddy’s impacts will be much more prolonged than what we would normally experience from an extratropical or tropical storm/hurricane as its expected to affect us for potentially more than 24 hours in some areas. While the winds will not be the worst we’ve ever experienced, we will be experiencing these winds over a much longer period of time than normal. Additionally, very heavy rainfall will saturate the ground and make it easier for winds to uproot trees, plus the prolonged high winds will make it more difficult for crews with Nova Scotia Power to make repairs until the storm fully moves out.

There are many factors to this storm that will make it one that will most certainly disrupt our everyday lives for the next day or two, and it is always important to be prepared because models do struggle with underestimating the power of some extratropical cyclones due to their complexity. If you remember, forecasts didn’t expect Dorian to remain Category 2-equivalent intensity prior to landfall, but it did.

HURRICANE TEDDY

Tuesday and Wednesday are going to be wet and windy here! While Hurricane Teddy may be downgraded to a tropical storm when it arrives tomorrow we have a wind warning, tropical storm warning, storm surge warning, and are expecting 36 hours of heavy winds and rain.

We were able to extend our Ro/Ro deliveries until Tuesday and will make a decision by 8:00 tomorrow (13:00 in Europe). All customers will be called that have vehicles affected.

Our office will be closing just after lunch tomorrow for the safety of our staff.

Let's hope Hurricane Teddy misses Nova Scotia and this doesn't happen!

We will be monitoring the forecasts before making the decision whether or not to drop off vehicles for Ro/Ro shipment early Monday morning. We will also work with ACL for late deliveries in light of the weather.

Here is Hurricane Teddy's possible tracks with respects to Atlantic Canada. Be prepared to start preparing for Hurricane Teddy starting this weekend, if the system remains on course. Approximately arrival date in Tuesday-Wednesday.

Review your supplies as soon as possible, make a list of items you may need. Be aware, you should plan on a minimum 72 hour power outage, as with any major storm. This system is still several days away from Atlantic Canada, things are likely to change. The Canadian Hurricane Centre will likely start issuing bulletins by the weekend.

This weekend, will be the best time for us all to have a better understanding of what will likely occur. Stay tuned.

Often when we sell used vehicles our customers wonder why we can't negotiate better prices for them than the advertised price on line. Below is a good example of why, and in fact we often have to pay MORE than the advertised price for vehicles. Crazy but true. This is from an Autotrader ad for a used 2015 F-150.

Does anyone remember the days when you used to get a discount if you paid for something outright rather than financed it?!

The advertising price reflects a financed vehicle purchase and includes the $700 financing rebate.
