Green Burials Ontario MacCoubrey Funeral Home and Cobourg Union Cemetery working together to offer a more eco friendly final disposition Please contact us today for more information.

Death and the funeral process is a very personal thing. There isn’t one correct way to handle your final arrangements, but there should be a way that is correct for you. Whether a person chooses traditional burial, cremation, a large funeral, or no service at all, a person should chose what they feel is most appropriate for them and their loved ones. Eco-friendly funerals provide just one more opt

ion for people to consider when planning their final disposition. Those who have a concern for the environment or have lived a “green” life style may wish to carry that into their funeralization. Traditional embalming uses formaldehydes and other toxins which eventually make their way into the ground. Cremation uses vast amounts of fossil fuels to achieve the prolonged temperatures required for the process and there is also the concern of emissions. Green funerals allow people to make plans which minimize the harmful effects on the planet. MacCoubrey Funeral Home has been working hand in hand with Cobourg Union Cemetery to develop a green option for the environmentally concerned members of the public. The green package offered by the funeral home includes environmental stationery, environmental embalming, environmental caskets and reduced vehicle usage. In conjunction with this the cemetery is opening a green section for environmental burials, those being immediate burials or environmentally embalmed burials using environmental containers or caskets. No standard embalmings or cremations will be allowed in this section of the cemetery. This portion of the cemetery will left in a natural setting with limited grounds keeping. Central field stone markers are planned to be used rather than individual markers. Tree planting and natural vegetation will be encouraged. While there are number of green products available in regards to burial containers and caskets, many are imported from foreign countries thus increasing the carbon footprint. There are however a number of Canadian casket companies that are producing a line of environmental caskets and containers. We carry products from Northern Casket Company and Victoriaville. These caskets should contain little to no metal (nails, hinges, screws etc.), be made with faster growth wood (poplar) from sustainable foresting methods from a near source and use no toxic finishes, glues or materials.
