Think how hard it is to walk in sand, you just have to work harder because of the resistance. When your tires don’t have enough air in them, their rolling resistance is dramatically increased and it simply takes more fuel to get from one destination to the other. Cobourg drivers should always check their tire pressure when they fill up with fuel. If they’re low even just a little bit bring them up to proper pressure. There’s a sticker on the inside of the driver’s door that gives the car maker’s recommended tire pressure.

And don’t rely on your tire pressure monitoring system to alert you to when you need more air. The TPMS system is set to warn you when pressure drops twenty percent below recommendations. That’s severely under inflated and you needed more air a long time ago. And if you have a slow leak get it fixed right away. We can get that done quickly at OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO.

Get some air and save some fuel.

When all of your vehicle’s wheels are lined up exactly with each other, your wheels are in alignment. Hitting a road hazard in Cobourg or even just the normal bumps and bounces of everyday driving in ON can cause your wheels to be out of alignment. This can lead to pricey premature tire and suspension wear.

Here are some alignment basics:

The first angle is called toe: do the wheels point in towards each other or away from each other at the front of the tire.
The next angle is called camber: do the wheels tip in or out at the top.
And finally, there is castor. Castor measures the angle where the front axles attach to the vehicle.
The ideal alignment for your vehicle was designed by its engineers. Alignment service in Cobourg at OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO starts with an inspection of the steering and suspension, to see if anything’s bent, broken or worn out. Then the OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO service advisor will look at tire condition.

From there, the vehicle is put on an alignment rack and an initial alignment reading is taken. The wheels are then aligned to car maker’s specifications.

Your car maker's owner’s manual probably has a recommendation for how often your alignment should be checked, usually every couple of years. If you suspect an alignment problem, get it checked at OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO in Cobourg before you suffer pricey tire or suspension damage.

Ask just about any driver about one thing they fear seeing inside their vehicle and they'll say it's the Check Engine light coming on. You know, that little light on your instrument panel that is in the shape of a vehicle engine, often accompanied by the words Check, Check Engine, Check Engine Service, or Service Engine Soon.

There are so many different reasons that light shows up, from something as simple as a loose gas cap to a more serious problem that requires immediate attention.

The Check Engine light comes on because a component of your vehicle's onboard diagnostics system is telling you something isn't operating normally. Your vehicle has a lot of sensors built in, all tied together by computers. When the sensors are showing that things somewhere aren't functioning the way they should be, they alert the vehicle's diagnostic computers and tell you something's amiss.

The simple rule is if the Check Engine light is on steadily, it's something you should have checked soon but it's not urgent. If it's flashing or has turned red or orange instead of yellow, get your vehicle checked out as soon as possible. If you don't, you may be facing some costly repairs.

Here are a few problem areas that may trigger your Check Engine Light.

Something's wrong with the emissions equipment. Maybe too much fuel is getting into the catalytic converter, or the exhaust gas recirculation system isn't working right. Because some of these components are expensive to replace, it's worthwhile to have a technician look at your vehicle sooner rather than later.
Your ignition system isn't working right. That means spark plugs, coils, and wires. If your engine is misfiring, that could translate into an illuminated Check Engine light.
The transmission isn't behaving the way it should. The transmission works in tandem with the engine, so if a sensor sees something wrong there, it will tell the vehicle to turn on the Check Engine light.
As you can see, there are many things that can cause the light to come on, and when it does, it really is a good idea to find out why. When you bring your vehicle in, we have an electronic device that can read a code or multiple codes stored in your vehicle's computers. That will provide the technician with clues pointing to the cause of the trouble and helps pinpoint where that trouble is.

If you’ve walked through the automotive fluids section of your favorite Cobourg auto parts store, you’ll know how overwhelming the sheer number of products available can be. How can Cobourg drivers know what’s right for their vehicle?

As you know, these fluids all serve a function in making your car run. Your car maker has specified a particular type of fluid for every system from the motor, to the cooling system, brake fluid and so on. When you realize that not every variation is applicable to your vehicle, the task becomes more manageable.

First let’s talk about why there are so many varieties. Starting with motor oil, we see that manufacturers match the properties of a particular weight or type of oil with the design needs of the engine. For example, engines with sophisticated valve trains often require a thinner weight of oil.

Some vehicles come from the factory filled with synthetic oil and the recommendation to use it for life. The safe bet for Cobourg drivers is to always use what the car maker recommends. The recommendation is what‘s been proven to work in function and durability tests. The recommended oil is also a factor in determining oil change interval schedules.

A good quality oil has more additives that are engineered to clean and protect the engine. They cost a bit more in Cobourg, but are worth the extra protection. If you buy budget oil, you might want to consider shortening your oil change interval.

Sometimes fluids are developed specifically to meet the needs of a particular family of engines. An example would be coolant. Because of the different materials used to build the cooling system, the coolant has to be formulated to protect those parts, which vary from car maker to car maker, from corrosion. We’ve seen special coolant for General Motors, Volkswagen, Chrysler and others.

The same is true of transmission fluid and brake fluid in recent years. The really good news is that OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO in Cobourg has databases that tell us the recommended fluids for your vehicle. This takes all the guess work out. If you have some special needs, like a higher odometer engine or want enhanced performance, ask your OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO service advisor for upgrades or additives that’ll meet your needs while being consistent with the car maker’s recommendations.

Of course, your full-service oil change will top off your fluids. But it’s a good idea to have some of everything at home in case you need to top something off yourself or to take on a trip. Ask your OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO service advisor or check your owner’s manual for fluid specifications.

Ever wonder how your vehicle’s transmission is connected to your wheels? After all, when you hit a pothole or some other uneven part of a road’s surface, there has to be something that can maintain the connection between the transmission and the wheel yet keep everything moving at the same speed.

That very cool device is called a CV joint, a kind of driveshaft running to each wheel. The CV stands for constant velocity because it keeps the drive wheels moving at a constant speed (velocity). They’re used mostly on front-wheel drive vehicles but also in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles.

The joints move up and down and adjust to bumpy surfaces. Plus, they are covered in a rubber boot which protects them from road debris and also holds lubrication in. There’s a CV joint and boot on the transmission side and one on the wheel side. Unfortunately, the spot that usually fails first is that rubber protective cover (the boot). After a lot of wear, tear, bumps, road hazards, heat, and you name it, the rubber rips and the lubrication leaks out. At that point, it must be replaced.

Here are signs to tell if your CV joint is bad.

Your vehicle is pulling to one side as a wheel loses power or you feel a vibration while driving.
You see grease on the inside or edge of your tires.
Your front tires won’t point in the same direction.
You hear grinding or clicking when you turn.
Sometimes if a broken boot early is caught early, a technician can pack in new grease and replace just the boot. But if the lubrication has leaked out and the joint is already wearing badly, the CV and boot both have to be replaced. Give your vehicle the boot (as in a new boot) and CV joint, and you’ll be back on the road to your next destination.

We all know driving on slippery ice can be dangerous. What you might not know is that wet leaves can be just as slick. If you live in an area that has trees that drop their leaves, or if you're traveling in an area where the fall foliage is worth a look, here are a few things that could help you avoid an accident.

Leaves are similar to ice when they get wet in that they create a barrier between the road and your tires. With ice, it's a layer of water. With leaves, it's the slippery surface they have on both sides added to a layer of water.

Some tests have shown that stopping distances more than double when you're traveling on a road with wet leaves compared to that same street that's dry and clear of debris. If you find yourself skidding on wet leaves, use the same driving techniques as you would on ice. Speed is your biggest enemy when you encounter any slippery surface, so just slow down when you are driving into any slick situation.

Having tires with enough tread will help you in challenging road conditions. Our Service Advisor is a good one to discuss this and can help you choose the right tire for your driving habits. After all, your tire is the point of traction between the road and your vehicle. Also, this might be a good time to have your tires evaluated. How is your tread depth? What condition is the rubber in your tires? Rubber doesn't age like a fine wine; it gets more brittle with age and can start to deteriorate not only because of the wear and tear it takes but simply from the number of years that have passed since your tires were manufactured.

And just remember always to keep an eye on the road ahead and never drive too fast for conditions, wet leaves or not. It's a simple tip to remember, and it really works.

Maintain Your Power Steering System
Dec 4th, 2022
Although a number of newer vehicles are coming equipped with electric power steering, the vast majority of Cobourg drivers's cars and trucks on the road use a hydraulic power boost system. With hydraulics, fluid is pressurized by a pump which actuates a hydraulic cylinder to reduce steering effort. Some of these pumps are powered by an electric motor. Most pumps are powered by the serpentine belt driven by the engine.

Power steering fluid provides power assistance and also protects components from rust and corrosion. Manufacturers recommend that the fluid be replaced on schedule. The old fluid is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly. Fresh fluid is then installed.

Unfortunately, many Cobourg drivers don’t realize how important it is to service their power steering, or even that it should be done at all. A neglected power steering system can develop leaks and the pump won’t last as long.

Signs that you may be having problems with your power steering system include the need to constantly to add power steering fluid, a loud whining from the pump, erratic power assist or high steering effort. If you’re experiencing any of these problems, have your power steering checked out at OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO.

In addition to the pump and hydraulic system, there are mechanical parts in the steering system. The tie rods, arms, joints and knuckles that actually turn the wheels can become worn or damaged, becoming a serious safety issue. A standard alignment service at OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO in Cobourg includes an inspection of steering components. If you notice any play in the steering wheel, that the steering wheel is off center, or a noise coming from your front wheels, especially when turning, have your OBSENTIA ENTERPRISES INC-GOODYEAR AUTOPRO service advisor do an inspection so the problem can be corrected. Waiting too long could cause uneven tire wear and may even lead to steering failure.
