πŸš—πŸ’¨ SOMEONE RIDING YOUR BUMPER?

A tailgater wants a reaction. Don't give them one:

1️⃣ STAY CALM β€” don't speed up, don't brake-check. Both make it worse.
2️⃣ MOVE OVER when it's safe and let them pass. It's not your job to police the road.
3️⃣ KEEP YOUR SPACE β€” add extra following distance from the car ahead so you can brake gently.
4️⃣ FEEL THREATENED? Drive to a busy public place and call 911. Never pull over for an aggressive driver.

The most dangerous thing you can do is match their energy. Let them go.

What's the wildest thing a tailgater has ever done to you? πŸ‘‡

πŸ›£οΈ MERGING ONTO THE HIGHWAY? MATCH THE SPEED, FIND THE GAP.

The on-ramp trips up a lot of drivers β€” but it gets easy once you know what that lane is actually for. It's called an acceleration lane for a reason: use it to get up to highway speed before you blend in.
Here's the sequence:

1️⃣ Signal early and start building your speed on the ramp.
2️⃣ Check your mirror and shoulder-check your blind spot toward the highway.
3️⃣ Pick a gap and merge smoothly at highway speed β€” blend in, don't cut sharply across.
4️⃣ Don't stop on the ramp unless traffic forces you to. Stopping kills your speed and makes merging far more dangerous.
Two things to remember: merging traffic yields to traffic already on the highway, so time your gap β€” but drivers already on the highway can help by moving over when it's safe. Merging is a team effort. πŸ’›

πŸ‘€ BLIND SPOTS: THE INVISIBLE DANGER ZONE.

Your mirrors don't show everything. The areas beside and just behind your car β€” your blind spots β€” are completely invisible in your mirrors. That's where other vehicles hide, and it's where lane-change crashes happen.

Make this your habit every single time:
1️⃣ Signal
2️⃣ Check your mirrors
3️⃣ SHOULDER CHECK β€” one quick glance over your shoulder before you move

It takes one second and it can prevent a crash. Don't trust your mirrors alone. πŸ’›

πŸ…ΏοΈ PARKING ON A HILL? TURN YOUR WHEELS THE RIGHT WAY.

It's one of the most-forgotten skills on the road test β€” and it's what stops a parked car from rolling into traffic if the brakes ever let go. Here's the whole thing in one simple rule:

πŸ‘‰ Angle your wheels to the RIGHT β€” unless you're facing uphill next to a curb, then angle them LEFT.

Break it down by situation:

⬇️ Downhill with a curb: wheels toward the curb β€” if it creeps, the tire wedges against the curb.
🚫 No curb (uphill or down): wheels toward the road's edge β€” a runaway car heads off the road, not into traffic.
⬆️ Uphill with a curb: wheels away from the curb β€” roll back and the tire catches it.

Easy way to remember the tricky one: UCLA β€” Uphill, Curb, Left, Angle.

And every single time, no matter the slope: set your parking brake and leave it in Park (or first gear for a manual). πŸ’›

β›½ DRIVE SMARTER, SAVE ON GAS. πŸ’°

Good driving habits don't just keep you safe β€” they keep money in your pocket. The same smooth, anticipating techniques we teach for collision-free driving also cut your fuel bill. Here are five that really work:@

1️⃣ Accelerate gently β€” Take about 5 seconds to reach 20 km/h from a stop. Picture an open coffee on the dash and don't spill it.
2️⃣ Keep a steady speed β€” Constant speeding up and slowing down wastes fuel. Use cruise control on the open highway.
3️⃣ Anticipate traffic β€” Look far ahead and keep your distance so you can roll and coast instead of braking hard.
4️⃣ Coast to decelerate β€” Lift off the gas early; most modern engines actually cut fuel while you coast in gear.
5️⃣ Ease off high speeds β€” Driving 120 km/h uses about 20% more fuel than 100. Most vehicles are happiest between 50–80 km/h.

Do all five and you could trim your yearly fuel bill by up to 25%. Add properly inflated tires and skip idling longer than 60 seconds, and you'll save even more. Smoother driving is safer driving β€” your wallet and your car both win. πŸ’›

🚦 STOP OR GO? MASTER THE STALE GREEN LIGHT.

We've all felt it β€” you're rolling toward a green that's been green a while (a "stale" green), and just as you get close… it turns amber. Freeze up, and you either slam the brakes or gun it. There's a better way, and it's all about deciding before it happens.

As you approach a stale green, pick your Point of No Return β€” the last spot where you could still stop safely and comfortably:
βœ… Already past that point when it turns amber? Keep going β€” stopping abruptly could get you rear-ended.
πŸ›‘ Not there yet? Ease off and come to a smooth stop.

When you choose that point, factor in your speed, the road surface (wet or icy?), and the traffic right behind you.

And remember what amber actually means: prepare to stop β€” not "floor it to beat the light." Deciding early turns a panic moment into a calm, confident one. πŸ’›

πŸ‘€ YOUR MIRRORS DON'T SEE EVERYTHING β€” CHECK YOUR BLIND SPOTS.

Even perfectly adjusted mirrors leave gaps on both rear corners of your vehicle β€” big enough to completely hide a car, and easily big enough to hide a cyclist or motorcycle. That's why the mirror check is only half the job.

Build this habit into every lane change and turn:
πŸͺž Mirror β€” check your rear-view and side mirror first.
πŸ”Ά Signal β€” let others know your intention early.
↩️ Shoulder-check β€” a quick head-turn to the blind spot on the side you're moving toward.
➑️ Then move β€” only once you've confirmed it's clear.

It takes less than a second, and it's the single best way to avoid a side-swipe. Be extra careful around motorcycles and cyclists β€” they slip into blind spots easily and have far less protection if you don't see them.

Mirrors can miss things. A shoulder check won't. πŸ’›
