Today we completed a valve cover gasket job on an 11-year-old Subaru with 194,000 km. The spark plug tube seals have started to seep a little, which is normal at this age, and the inside of this engine still looks incredibly clean ✨

No varnish build up, no sludge, no signs of camshaft wear. After nearly 200,000 km, this engine is clean, healthy and performing like new 🔧 Ready for another 200,000 km of reliable driving.

At TheGarage we like to look at it from the perspective of, “what can we do to make sure the vehicle avoids a Big expensive repair job that forces the decision to potentially let go of a vehicle at an inconvenient time”.❓

Our answer often is;

🔧 A Great Reminder of Why Inspections Matter

A client recently brought their 2014 Subaru Forester with only 97,000 km to us for their first visit at The Garage. Their goal was simple. Get a clear picture of the vehicle’s overall condition and create a maintenance plan moving forward since they plan to keep the car long term.

The client did not report any concerns. The brakes were not making noise and everything felt normal during the road test. During our inspection, we discovered something serious. The brake pads were actually broken in half and sitting loosely inside the calipers. The rotors were also heavily rusted from the vehicle’s lifestyle use. This Forester spends a lot of time on camping trips, outdoor adventures, and winter ski runs.

This situation is a great example of why routine inspections are so important, even when there are no obvious noises or symptoms. Many components slowly degrade over time from age, rust, and environmental conditions, especially here in BC.

Fortunately, we caught this early. Our team was able to repair the issue before it caused further damage to the braking system or created a safety concern.

The most valuable thing you can do as a vehicle owner is schedule a thorough inspection. It helps you understand the true condition of your vehicle and allows you to catch problems early, before they turn into bigger and more expensive repairs.
