The Spurs’ NBA Finals loss may sting, but San Antonio’s 2025-26 season was a massive step ahead of schedule.

Led by Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs went from a 34-win team a year ago to a 62-20 powerhouse that reached the NBA Finals far sooner than most analysts expected. Despite falling to the New York Knicks in five games, San Antonio emerged as one of the league’s brightest young contenders, powered by a core featuring Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant. After a dominant second half that saw the Spurs go 30-4 from February onward, the franchise now appears positioned to contend for championships for years to come.

A 24-year-old woman has died after a bungee jumping accident in Brazil, where witnesses say she was sent off a bridge without being properly connected to safety equipment.

The tragedy occurred at the abandoned “Skeleton Bridge” in São Paulo state, a location known for extreme sports activities despite lacking official regulation. Witnesses told local media that staff allegedly failed to attach the woman's safety rope before her jump, causing her to fall approximately 35 metres. Onlookers described panic at the scene as operators reportedly realized the mistake only after she had already jumped. Police are investigating the incident, while questions are mounting about safety standards at the unregulated attraction.

Alt-pop musician and internet personality Oliver Tree is among six people killed in a helicopter collision over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 32-year-old artist, known for hits like Life Goes On, Miss You, and Alien Boy, was reportedly travelling between tour stops when two helicopters collided on Sunday. One of the aircraft crashed into a dealership parking lot, igniting multiple vehicles and sending thick smoke into the air. Brazilian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision. Tributes have poured in from fellow creators and musicians, including KSI and Steve-O, who remembered Tree as a talented artist and caring friend.

The New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years sparked massive celebrations across Manhattan — but the festivities quickly turned chaotic.

Thousands of fans flooded the streets after New York defeated the San Antonio Spurs to capture the NBA title, with jubilant scenes giving way to vandalism, fires, assaults and a shooting in Times Square. Police say a 17-year-old was shot near Broadway, multiple people were stabbed or slashed, vehicles were damaged, and a bus was set ablaze during the overnight unrest. Authorities reported 63 arrests as city officials urged fans to celebrate responsibly ahead of the team's championship parade.

FIFA is easing its World Cup water bottle rules after backlash from fans and concerns over extreme heat.

The organization announced that spectators will now be allowed to bring one factory-sealed disposable plastic water bottle (up to 590 ml) into 2026 World Cup matches in Canada and the United States. The move reverses part of an earlier policy that banned all outside bottles, including refillable containers. FIFA says hard-sided reusable bottles will still be prohibited for security reasons, while hydration stations, cooling tents and misting areas will be available at venues as concerns grow over potentially dangerous temperatures during the tournament.

Nova Scotia’s famous Honeycrisp apples are smaller this year, and last summer’s drought is largely to blame.

Apple growers say a lack of rainfall in 2025 limited fruit growth, resulting in noticeably smaller Honeycrisps, which are normally known for their oversized appearance. Because apples are mostly made of water, dry conditions can significantly impact their size. Despite the smaller fruit, growers say the apples remain high quality and expect Honeycrisps to return to their usual large size if weather conditions improve and rainfall returns to normal throughout the growing season.

Nearly 3,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles entered Canada in May as Ottawa’s new tariff deal with Beijing begins to take effect.

Government data shows 2,910 EVs arrived from China last month after the federal government agreed to allow up to 49,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles into Canada annually at a reduced tariff rate. Prime Minister Mark Carney has suggested many of the imports could be Tesla models manufactured in China. Industry groups say increased competition, combined with returning EV rebates and higher gasoline prices, could help lower EV prices for Canadian consumers in the months ahead.
