An automatic transmission's solenoids control the shifting of gears by regulating the flow of transmission fluid through the transmission:
How they work
The transmission's computer sends signals to the solenoids, which then open and close valves to direct the fluid to the clutch or valves. This controls the hydraulic pressure in the transmission, which allows for smooth gear changes.
What they do
Solenoids control the gear ratio, and some also control when the torque converter locks up.
How they're made
Solenoids are electrohydraulic valves made of nine parts, including a valve body, inlet and outlet ports, a coil body, a coil winding, a plunger or piston, a spring, an or***ce, and lead wires.
What can happen if they don't work properly
If a solenoid isn't working properly, it can cause problems like delayed shifting, shifting into the wrong gear, or the transmission refusing to downshift.
