📣 An important update from North Island Driving School: Lessons will be pausing for the month of September while our instructors are away for training. 🚗

First, a big congratulations and best of luck to Amanda as she heads away for further education in September. Amanda has been the heart of North Island Driving School since the beginning, and we are so proud to see her continuing to build on her skills and expertise!

We are also thrilled to welcome a new instructor to the team who will be completing instructor training in September and hitting the ground running in October.

Lessons resume in October with our new team, and we can’t wait to get back on the road! 🙌

In the meantime:

• Book your August lessons now before the pause
• Book Road Test Support for September (this service is still available during the pause - so if your test is coming up, we've got you covered!)
• Stay tuned for October availability

Speed control is one of the most important things your ICBC examiner will be watching on your road test, and it is also one of the easiest to get wrong under pressure. 🚗

Your examiner is evaluating whether you are travelling at a safe and appropriate speed for the conditions at all times, not just whether you are under the posted limit. A lot of new drivers focus so much on the technical skills like shoulder checks and lane changes that they forget to manage their speed consistently throughout the test.

Certain actions are considered unsafe driving manoeuvres and result in an automatic fail, no matter how well the rest of your test goes, and speeding is one of them. Going even slightly over the posted speed limit is breaking the law, and on a road test it is an instant fail. The same applies to rolling through a stop sign, failing to yield, or any other action that would be considered an offence on public roads.

A few things to focus on:
• Always know what the speed limit is and follow it.
• Adjust your speed for conditions, not just the posted limit. Wet roads, heavy traffic, and poor visibility all call for a slower speed than the sign allows
• Ease off well before intersections and don't rush through them
• On residential streets, slow and safe is always the right call

🚗 Have you heard about our Campbell River Road Trip Experience?

One of the biggest challenges for new drivers on the North Island is that our local roads simply don't offer everything real life driving demands. Multi-lane intersections, urban traffic, busy highways - these are skills that are hard to build when you live north of Campbell River. That's exactly why we created this service. 🛣️

The Campbell River Road Trip Experience is a full-day excursion that takes students out of familiar territory and into the kinds of driving conditions they will eventually need to handle confidently. Urban intersections, merging in multi-lane traffic, sustained highway driving - it's the kind of hands-on exposure that no local lesson can fully replicate, and students come back noticeably more confident for it.

A few things to know:
- Pricing is $500 from Port McNeill or $550 from Port Hardy
- A minimum of 3 hours of lesson time with instructor approval is required before booking, and is at the Instructor's discretion
- The experience runs with a minimum of 2 students - if you're booking solo, you may be matched with another student booking

If you're working toward your N and want to make sure you're ready for whatever the road throws at you, this is worth looking into. 🙌

🚗 Getting your N isn’t a given, it's about the time you put in practising.

Your instructor will teach you the skills and habits you need, but the repetitive practise is what makes those habits stick. Every hour you spend behind the wheel with a supervising driver builds the kind of muscle memory and confidence that no amount of studying can replace.

Here are a few ways to make the most of your practise time:

- Drive in a variety of conditions - daytime, evening, rain, and different types of roads
- practise the skills your instructor has flagged for improvement, not just the ones you're already comfortable with
- Ask your supervising driver to call out directions as if they were an examiner, so responding to instructions feels natural by test day
- Keep a log of your practise hours. ICBC encourages a minimum of 60 hours of supervised driving before your road test

The more time you spend driving before your test, the more relaxed and prepared you will feel when it counts.

Step 1: Book a lesson
Step 2: practise what you've learned. 🤓✅

📋 FAQ: Can my instructor drive the ICBC exam route with me before my road test?

It's a question we get asked fairly often, and the answer is always no. Here's why.

🚗 ICBC does not publicly release road test routes, and driving instructors are not permitted to teach specific exam routes to students. This is intentional. The road test is designed to evaluate how a student responds to directions in real time and handles a variety of traffic situations and road conditions - not whether they have memorized a specific set of turns.

What we can do, and what we focus on every lesson, is make sure you are as prepared as possible for whatever route you are given. That means building strong habits around shoulder checks, intersection navigation, speed management, lane changes, and responding calmly to instructions from an examiner. A well practised driver should be able to handle any route confidently, not just a familiar one.

The best preparation for your road test isn't knowing where you're going - it's knowing how to drive well no matter where that is. 💪

07/02/2026

July means tourist season is in full swing, and the roads around the North Island look and feel a little different this time of year. More vehicles, more unfamiliar drivers, more people pulling over suddenly if they spy an elk or want to grab a photo of a bald eagle. That's all part of what makes this place special, but, just like winter driving, it's worth adjusting your driving habits to match. 🚗🌊

A few things to keep in mind this month:

• Give yourself more time than you think you need. Tourist traffic, ferry lineups, and summer road activities can add unexpected delays, and being in a hurry is when mistakes can happen
• Increase your following distance. Visitors may be unfamiliar with the roads, drive slower than expected, or brake suddenly when something catches their eye
• Watch for vehicles stopped on the shoulder or pulling over without much notice - it happens a lot in summer and can catch you off guard if you're following too closely
• Pedestrian activity increases significantly in summer, especially near the ferry terminals, cultural sites, and waterfront areas
• Be patient with out-of-town drivers. They may be navigating unfamiliar roads, driving rental vehicles, or simply not sure where they're going

Summer on the North Island is something worth slowing down for. 😉☀️
