Should I change my oil before I store my motorcycle for the winter, or before my first spring ride after the winter? I see that question a lot, and my take is simple. Just change your oil when it's due as part of your normal service and maintenance schedule. People stress about engine and transmission parts sitting in old, acidic oil, but that fear is over rated in my opinion. Harley riders can just sit back and laugh with their dry sumps, but the rest of you can relax a little, too. I use mineral oil (coz I'm old), and the CBR 600 I ride should get new oil and a new filter every 12,000 k (according to Haynes service manual). Fact is, I aim for between 3 and 5,000 k and usually hover closer to the 3 than the 5. Most people I know are fairly conservative, too, so you can see that stressing out about whether or not to change oil before or after storage is just gonna drive you prematurely gray.
