WHY OMC QUIT SNOWMOBILES
By the early 1960’s OMC was highly diversified. Its varied divisions were building: diving compressors, tent campers, snow blowers, all-terrain vehicles, golf & commercial carts, turf equipment, chain saws and boats. In 1964, they added snowmobiles to this diverse list.
OMC’s Sled Ride – OMC made three brands of snowmobiles, OMC Snow Cruiser (Canada), Evinrude Skeeter & Johnson Skee Horse (US), which were introduced in winter of 1965. OMC was the first manufacturer to use a 2-stroke engine with opposing twin cylinders in their sleds. It had a neutral gear for ease of starting, not common for the 1960's. The sleds weighed 369 lb, which was 100 lb more than most other snowmobiles at the time and had a hard time in deep snow due to the weight. They could reach a speed of 30 mph, and were reliable in all situations, uncommon in the 1960's -- except for deep snow. Over time, through constant improvement the sleds became considerably more sophisticated and provided better performance.
Melted Expectations - The Snow Cruiser was retired in 1971 and Evinrude & Johnson in 1976. But why quit after spending hundreds of thousands greatly improving their machines over 10 years. The answer is in the numbers. By the early 1970’s there over 100 companies building snowmobiles. In 1972, total market sales were 575,000 sleds of which OMC sold 26,000 – less than 5%, while outboard sales were over 52% of the world market. And, most tellingly, Bombardier sales were 210,500 sleds while Arctic Enterprises sales were 97,000. It was apparent that this was a sideline for OMC, while a focused business for Bombardier and Arctic. The message was clear, OMC would never be a dominate player like they were in outboards.

The Beginning of 'Common' Evinrude & Johnson Outboards
While on location in Florida, Gary Cooper, star of the 1951 movie, “Distant Drums,” commuted 8-miles to the Everglades with a newly launched 1951 Johnson Sea-Horse 25. Note that the 1952 ad copy states that the $390 price is made possible because of “Johnson’s Big Production.” (aka volume) The volume, however, was actually due to both Johnson & Evinrude building the same motor.
OMC’s First Standardized Motors - In 1951, at the direction of OMC Chairman, Steven Briggs, the standardization between Johnson & Evinrude products began with a new twin-cylinder 25hp outboard. Though styling differed, the Johnson 25 & Evinrude 25 were basically the same outboard and most of their parts were interchangeable. Johnson produced all the die-cast aluminum parts in Waukegan, as well as gears and screw machine parts. Evinrude made the crankshafts, driveshafts, propshafts and connecting rods in Milwaukee while Gale manufactured the magnetos, carburetors and fuel tanks in Galesburg, Illinois. (Notably, this was one of the rare times that Brooks Stevens also styled the Johnson outboard.)
While Evinrude was branded the “Big Twin”, Johnson was marketed simply as the Johnson Sea-Horse 25 - and both outboards sold for the same $390. Standardization would continue to evolve over the coming years in various stages until both outboards were virtually the same by the 1970’s except for styling.

Ralph Evinrude – The Later Years
During World War II, Ralph put in 12 to 14 hour days managing the company’s production of war equipment. He assisted the war effort by standing watch over the icy waters of Lake Michigan on evenings and weekends. Ralph also donated his own personal watercraft to help the Coast Guard patrol the shores of Florida.
In 1953, Ralph was elected vice chairman of the board and chairman of OMC’s Executive Committee. During his tenure, Ralph elevated the family-run business to a Fortune 500 company. In addition to expanding the company’s offerings to include sterndrives and lawn care products, he played an active role in the development of modern fully-enclosed engine styling, noise silencing advances, electric starting and remote controls. In 1982 when Ralph retired as chairman, OMC employed more than 9,000 persons in operations throughout the world.
After his retirement, he lived in Jensen Beach, Florida with his wife, actress and singer Frances Langford. They shared interests in business and boating and spent much of their time aboard their 118-foot yacht Chanticleer. Prior to his death in 1986, he headed up three philanthropic foundations and founded the Ralph Evinrude School of Marine Technology at the Florida Institute of Technology. Continuing the legacy of his father, Ralph Evinrude made a lifetime contribution to the sport and the technology of boating.
