What does tyre size mean?

To someone unfamiliar with tire terminology, the sidewall of a tire may appear as a confusing combination of numbers, letters, and symbols. Within this information lies the tire size. However, what does it actually represent and, more importantly, what is its meaning?

1. The first three digits, in this instance 245, indicate the tire's sectional width. It represents the measurement, in millimeters, from the inner sidewall to the outer sidewall of the tire.
2.The aspect ratio, also known as the profile, indicates the sidewall height as a percentage of the section width. In this case, a value of 45 means that the height is 45% of the 245mm width. A larger aspect ratio corresponds to a taller sidewall.
3. The digit following the construction type represents the wheel's rim diameter, which is measured in inches. In this example, the rim diameter is 17 inches.
