The Thrust SSC (SuperSonic Car) holds the current world land speed record, achieving 763.035 mph (1,227.985 km/h) on October 15, 1997, in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. This milestone made it the first car to officially break the sound barrier on land.
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS
Designed by a team led by Richard Noble and driven by Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green, the Thrust SSC was powered by two Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines, each producing 50,000 pounds of thrust. The car measured 54 feet (16.5 meters) in length and weighed nearly 10 tons.
