The Caribbean region is characterized by one of the world‘s highest energy costs per capita, heavily reliant on high price imported distillate and heavy fuel oil. Electricity prices in the Caribbean are among the highest in the world, and they fluctuate greatly with the global price of oil. The primary cause of high electricity costs within most Caribbean countries may be linked to the use of dies
el and heavy fuel oil for transportation and electricity generation. However, the Caribbean possesses a wealth of Renewable Energy resources which would allow the Region to become more energy independent and possibly to generate exports in the energy sector. Energy Efficiency (EE) and Renewable Energy (RE) technologies have been identified as the two (2) mechanisms through which this independence can be attained. Although substantial finances and research have been directed primarily towards EE and RE technologies, the the utilization of Electric Vehicles (EV’s) has to some extent not been seriously considered as a viable mechanism through which the Region can attain its energy independence. In an attempt to comprehensively analyze the impacts which EV’s can have on the economies of the Caribbean, GIZ in partnership with the CARICOM Secretariat, the Barbados Renewable Energy Association (BREA) and the Barbados based Electric Vehicle (EV) company Megapower will seek to host an Electric Vehicles show and conference- hosted as part of the 2015 CARICOM energy week which will be held from 8th-14th November 2015 under the theme, “Empowering our Sustainable Development”. The main focus of CARICOM Energy Week 2015 is to “Empower” by spreading awareness on the importance of the utilization of clean and renewable energies, as well as, to promote Energy Efficiency across the Region. It also establishes a platform for dialogue on best practices, policies and challenges within the Sector. the first event of its kind in the Caribbean, EVlution Driving Change will be free to attend and open to the public. Car manufacturers from across Barbados will be encouraged to showcase electric vehicles. There will be EV quizzes and prizes and drag RACES (EV vs traditional engine vehicles) and you will have the opportunity to experience the EVlution first hand by test driving an EVcar on the Bushy Park track!
