4th gear has officially left the chat. 💀🦷

This Ford Mustang's MT82 manual gearbox came in with a very unhappy 4th gear. Safe to say the tooth fairy is going to have a decent haul tonight!
When gear teeth let go like this, the damage doesn't stop there. Every broken tooth becomes shrapnel, making its way through the gearbox and often taking out bearings, synchros and other gears along the way.
Time for a full strip down, inspection and rebuild to get this Mustang back to rowing through the gears the way it should.

Not something you see every day. 1982 Cadillac Fleetwood fitted with the first ever made GM 4 speed the TH200-4R

This beauty came into us for a transmission recondition and turned out to be a bit of a history lesson. Sitting behind the V8 is GM's first 4-speed overdrive automatic and a transmission that was never factory-delivered in Australian vehicles.

In over 20 years in the industry, this is the first one I've personally had on the bench.

Being such a rare unit in Australia, sourcing parts wasn't straightforward. Components had to be tracked down from multiple suppliers across Australia, with several hard-to-find parts coming directly from the USA.

It wasn't the quickest build we've ever done, but sometimes doing the job properly means taking the time to find the right parts rather than taking shortcuts.

A big thank you to the owner for his patience and understanding throughout the process.

The good news? We got it finished just in time for Lowriders in the Park this weekend.

From the newest 10-speed transmissions to one of GM's earliest 4-speed overdrives, we love the challenge.

Transmission surgery in progress 🔧
This Colorado's 6L50 is stripped, cleaned and laid out ready for rebuild.
Every clutch pack, bush, bearing, seal and hard part gets inspected before a single component goes back together.
A lot of people only ever see the transmission when it's bolted back in the vehicle. This is the part they don't see — where the diagnosis is confirmed and the rebuild plan comes together.
Soon this bench full of parts will be a fully rebuilt transmission ready for many more kilometres of service.

Weekend ready 👌🏽

The 6L80E it this clean VF Commodore SS has been treated to a heavy-duty rebuild loaded with quality Sonnax upgrades, a TransGo shift kit, a billet cover high-stall converter, and finished off with a custom HP Tuners transmission calibration.
The increased stall speed will help get this LS3 into its powerband quicker, while the tuning sharpens up shift quality, converter behaviour and overall drivability.
This one is ready to head home and enjoy the weekend.

This is where holding power starts 💪
On the right → factory style 4-5-6 clutch.
On the left → our upgraded 43 tooth Powerglide-style clutch conversion.
This 6L80 build is getting some serious upgrades:
✔️ Sonnax extreme duty 4-5-6 clutch hub and intermediate shaft
✔️ 43 tooth high-capacity clutch conversion
✔️ Increased clutch count AND larger friction surface area
Factory these run a 6 friction setup.
This build is stepping up to 7 frictions while also increasing the physical friction surface area using the larger 43 tooth arrangement.
The result?
👉 Around 57% more friction surface capacity over the factory setup.
That means: • More holding power
• Better heat management
• Less chance of clutch slip
• More reliability when power and load go up
Big credit to Sonnax for engineering quality parts that let us build these transmissions to a level that simply wasn’t possible with the factory hardware.
You never see these upgrades once the transmission is back in the car… but this is the sort of stuff that makes the difference between standard and built.
