We are aware of an intermittent issue with our diesel pump, where it will sometimes dispense fuel and sometimes won’t.

This is affecting both during business hours and our after-hours service.

Ninety-one. That's it. Blink and it'll be December.

We're not putting the tinsel up just yet, but it's worth a thought now while there's still time to do things properly:

💙 💙 Blue Motorcycle Project reminder💙 💙

There's a blue motorcycle out the front. Here's what it means.

If you've pulled in for fuel lately, you might have spotted it. Woodenbong Driveway is an official Blue Motorcycle Project location, and we're proud of that.

The project puts painted blue motorcycles on stands at sites right across Australia. Each one is a permanent reminder that mental health matters — especially for riders, who often travel on their own, cover long distances, and can carry a fair bit without ever letting on.

The message behind it is simple. If you see a blue motorcycle at a place, that's a signal this is somewhere you can talk. Somewhere it's alright to stop, have a yarn, and check in on your mates.

Ours came together in-house. Rod built the stand from scratch, and Renai gave up her own time to paint the bike. It turned out better than we hoped. 🏍️

So next time you're through, take a minute to have a look. And if someone you know has gone quiet lately, give them a ring. Sometimes that's all it takes.

⚙️ Engine Transmission: The repair bill nobody sees coming

Your transmission does a lot of quiet work. It takes what the engine makes and gets it to the wheels, whether you're crawling up a farm track or sitting on a hundred on the Summerland Way.

When one goes, it hurts. Repairs generally sit somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000, and a full replacement can climb to $4,000. Because reconditioning a transmission is such a big job, fixing one often costs about as much as fitting a replacement.

Here's the frustrating part. Most automatic transmission failures come back to the fluid. It burns, breaks down or gets low, and the damage builds up quietly over years. Transmission fluid doesn't need changing anywhere near as often as engine oil, which is exactly why people forget it exists. 🔧

Manuals aren't immune either. Riding the clutch, holding it at the lights, or slamming through gears will wear out a clutch well before its time.

Watch out for slipping between gears, a shudder when it changes, a delay when you put it in drive, or a burnt smell. Any of those, get it looked at early. A fluid and filter change is a fraction of what a rebuild costs. 🚗

❄️ When did your air con last blow properly cold?

Out here, a working air con isn't a luxury. Between the humidity and the long drives, most of us run it a fair chunk of the year — and it's the fastest way to clear a foggy windscreen in winter too.

The compressor is the heart of it. It pumps the refrigerant around the system and does the hard work of pulling heat out of your cabin. When one fails, you're generally looking at $200 to $600 depending on the car, plus around $100 to charge the system back up.

Most of the time though, it hasn't failed. Air con just loses its punch slowly, year by year, as a bit of gas escapes through the seals. An air con regas sorts that out and you'd be surprised how much difference it makes. 🚗

The other cheap win is the cabin air filter. It sits behind the glovebox on most cars, catches dust and pollen, and clogs up over time. Around $50 for the part, and if yours has never been changed, it's probably filthy!

Our workshop does automotive air conditioning in-house, so we can test the system, find any leaks and get it sorted in one visit. Worth booking in now before the summer rush hits and those warm days kick in. 🔧

You know the feeling. You've sorted the present, you're pretty pleased with yourself, then you get home and realise there's nothing to wrap it in. Shops are shut. The gift bag from last Christmas has someone else's name on it.

Wrapping paper is one of those things nobody thinks to buy until the moment they need it. 🤷

So we've made it easy. We're clearing out our wrapping paper at 3 rolls for $5 — birthdays, Christmas, weddings, or that present you've got to hand over first thing tomorrow. Plenty of patterns to pick from, and at that price you may as well grab a few and keep them in the cupboard.

⏱️ The small part that can write off your engine!

The timing belt doesn't look like much. It's a rubber belt tucked away behind a cover, and most people never lay eyes on it. But it keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in step with each other, and when it lets go, things get expensive fast.

Most makers want it replaced around the 100,000km mark. Parts and labour usually run a few hundred dollars, though it climbs into the thousands on some European models.

Here's the bit worth knowing. Engines are either interference or non-interference. If you've got an interference engine and the belt snaps, the valves and pistons meet each other at speed. That's not a belt job anymore — that's often a full engine rebuild. 💸

Some cars use a timing chain instead. Chains don't have a set replacement interval, but they do stretch over the years. Signs to watch for are a rattle on start-up, misfires, or metal flakes showing up in the oil.

Either way, it's not something to guess at. Get it looked at as part of your scheduled service and you'll know where you stand. A few hundred spent now beats a few thousand later. 🔧

A big congratulations to Fay on the sale of Thrifty T. ❤️

It’s a bit hard to believe after all these years that Fay won’t be behind the counter anymore!

We’ve been neighbours for a very long time, with our home next door to Thrifty T and Woodenbong Driveway just down the road. Between us, we’ve certainly seen a lot of changes in business and in Woodenbong over the years.

We’ve watched fuel prices change more times than we’d like to remember, freight and delivery costs go up, suppliers and systems change, and the price of just about everything increase. Running a small business in a country town isn’t always easy, but Fay kept adapting, kept going and made Thrifty T part of Woodenbong for many years.

There have been plenty of chats over the years about business, what was happening around town, the latest price rises and probably the occasional whinge when things didn’t quite go to plan! 😂

It’s going to seem very strange looking next door and not seeing Fay there.

Congratulations Fay. We hope you’re proud of what you’ve achieved and that you enjoy whatever comes next — hopefully with a little more time to put your feet up and enjoy yourself.

Remember when a spare car key cost ten bucks?

You'd wander into the shopping centre, wait five minutes, and walk out with a copy. Those days are long gone.

▶️ Most cars built in the last twenty years use a key with a chip in it. That key has to be ordered in, cut, and then coded to your car. Depending on the make and model, you're looking at roughly $250 to $750 for one replacement.

▶️ Lose every key you own and it gets worse. The whole set has to be made from scratch and the car's computer reset to match. That job usually has to go through a dealership, and the bill can land somewhere between $2,000 and $5,000. 😳

▶️ Then there's the part nobody thinks about — the time. You're off the road while you wait, and you've spent half a day tearing the house apart first.

Two things worth doing. Keep your spare somewhere safe and known, not floating in the bottom of a handbag. And if you're buying a used car, ask to see all the original keys before you hand over any money. Plenty of second-hand cars turn up with just the one, and that's a hidden cost you'll wear later. 🚗
