Thoughts are with Matt family, friends and the entire karting community.
We have lost a man with so much passion for our sport, a great commentator and true gentleman.
RIP Matt πŸ’”

VALE: MATT PAYNE

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the sudden passing of long-time karting commentator Matt Payne aged 46.

For more than 20 years, Matt has been the voice of Australian karting, providing media and commentary services at events across the country. Through his work as a commentator and journalist, he witnessed the development of countless young drivers who have gone on to successful careers in motorsport, and he took genuine pride in helping tell their stories and celebrate their achievements. His passion for karting, his knowledge of the sport, and his familiar voice will be deeply missed by competitors, officials and families alike.

On behalf of everyone at Karting Australia and the broader karting community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his mother Helen, his brother Daniel, and the extended Payne family and friends during this very difficult time.

Details of Matt’s funeral arrangements will be shared once they are available.

🏁 AWKC Club Championship – Round 2 Recap 🏁

What a fantastic day of racing at Albury Wodonga Kart Club for Round 2 of our Club Championship on 31st May! We mixed it up by running the reverse short track!

With over 40 drivers competing across 9 classes, the grids were packed and the racing was fierce from the first session to the final chequered flag. It was great to see such strong participation and enthusiasm from drivers, families and supporters throughout the day.

πŸ‘ One of the highlights of the meeting was the introduction of a dedicated Provisional Class for our P Plate junior drivers. This initiative gave our newest racers the opportunity to compete amongst their peers, build confidence and gain valuable race experience in a supportive environment. We loved seeing these young drivers out on track and developing their skills!

🌧️ The track was still carrying plenty of moisture from the steady rainfall the day before and was slow to dry in the chilly conditions. Drivers and teams faced changing track conditions throughout the day as patches of grip emerged and racing lines evolved. Thankfully, the sun eventually broke through, bringing some welcome warmth and allowing classes to transition onto slick tyres as the circuit dried.

🀝 A special thank you to our friends from Wagga and District Kart Club, who brought a fantastic contingent of drivers and support crews to join us for the weekend. The support between our neighbouring clubs helps create strong fields, quality racing and lasting friendships. It’s this spirit of cooperation and community that makes grassroots karting in our region so special.

We'd also like to thank everyone who travelled from other clubs to race with us. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps make our race meetings successful.

πŸ‘ As always, a massive thank you to our officials, volunteers and club members who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Without you, club racing simply wouldn't happen.

πŸ“… What's coming up?

🏎️ GPS Round 3 – Gippsland – 13th & 14th June

🏎️ VCS Round 3 – Portland – 20th & 21st June

We look forward to seeing AWKC members flying the flag at both events!
